“Just let me call Rob…” U Haul

I’ll start with the positive… if you want to find a UHaul center, there’s one in almost every town and it takes no time at all to track down your local dealer.

If you find yourself in need of boxes, bubble wrap, tape, gloves, rope… everything is available for purchase in their centers and the costs are usually competitive with local shops. For bigger moving needs, such as hand trucks, they offer a rental service at very reasonable costs.

So they can handle your “moving accessories” and they’re easy to find. Now let’s deal with the flip side of the UHaul coin.

A horrible experience U Haul

So I made a reservation about 2 weeks in advance on-line for a one-way trip. I received my confirmation call the night before and I confirmed again in the morning before I left. I arrived at the location (with some hired help) and, to my surprise, the location was closed. So, I call U-haul and they send me to another location (with some attitude on the phone). I travel to the new location and, although they were open there was no truck. I call U-haul back and they tell me that I would have to travel an hour out of my way to pick up a truck. Now, I had hired people for up to four hours which, at this point, is half gone. Traveling to the new location would have taken up all of the time I had the for so I was unable to do my move. When I spoke with them that day, and when I called the following day to lodge a complaint, I was given a lot of attitude on the phone, like I was the one who had messed up. I was given no compensation for my time and was basically told that it wasn’t their problem that I had to pay my for their time. I will never use this company again.

What a racket U Haul

I reserved a 6×12 trailer a month ahead of our move. We only needed it one day. The day before I confirmed a time to meet the guy who was to provide the Uhaul because they were closed on the weekend. Everything was okay and good. We got there and waited for at least 30 minutes when a guy showed up with a tow truck. He phoned the guy who was suppose to be there we talked to him on the phone and were instructed to call the 1-800 number. We knew when we got there as we looked around the lot that there was going to be a problem since there were no 6×12 in sight. We then were told we needed to go to a town 2 hours away and pick up the trailer. The Rep. on the phone tried to get in touch with us THAT day but we were already on our way to get the trailer. There were no other companies in this specific town to rent from that were open. But the guy with the tow truck made a stupid comment on how that is why Uhaul is so great, because they are open 24/7 for your customer service. Hmmm, may be right but they don’t have your stuff when you get there. Anyway, we went over to this other town 2 hours away and got the trailer, which by the way had an antique light hook-up so we had to buy a adapter for that. We ended up staying in a hotel since four hours of our traveling time was taken from our plans. I will be looking elsewhere next time. This was a small town we were moving our daughter out of, so if you are thinking of moving from a small town check out your options and maybe talk to a rep. on the phone. We made our reservations on their web-site.

Fuel Surcharge Robbery U Haul

I rented a Uhaul truck on January 2nd to move my belongings from my old residence to my new apartment. Aside from the fact that I chose to move on a -30 degree day and the heat in the truck didn’t work at all, I was very disappointed with the entire experience. When I rented the truck, I was informed that the gas tank was half full, and that if I did not return at or above this level a fuel charge would apply. As a result, I was very conciensious regarding the refilling of the truck; I put in about $15, and this brought the needle to just over half. Today, I received my credit card statement, and my bill is about $100 more than I had anticipated. I called a customer service rep at the store, and she explained to me that the technician had reported the truck to be at a quarter of a tank. The only way to negate this charge, of course, would be for me to produce my month-old gas receipt…not likely. I attempted to explore other options, such as a copy of my bank statement showing that I had, indeed, filled the truck. But to no avail. If I had a gas receipt, ANY gas receipt, from January 2nd, I would submit it to them. Unfortunately, I don’t, and am now stuck with a $95 fuel charge.

Prior to this experience, I had been warned that Uhaul had shady practices. Now I know, and will not be using the company ever again.

They will stick you where they can! U Haul

I recently went to U-Haul because I needed to rent a trailer. I must say that I was very disappointed in their service. Here’s the reasons why:

First, I called their 800 number to find out the nearest location from the point I was at. I had to answer this slew of questions like my name, my address, my vehicle type, etc. Then their rep went on to ask for a credit card number. My question was what for? I only want to know where the nearest location was. The comeback was to ensure availability. I told the rep that I wasn’t sure if I was going through them, and all I wanted at that point was the nearest location address. She kept telling me how I needed to give a credit card number to ensure availability of a rental. I finally got agitated and told her that I would find out myself since she refused to give it to me.

All wet U Haul

I made a reservation for a one-way rental, a 10-foot truck, to go ~1000 miles. The reservation was confirmed. The day before my scheduled pick-up, I called the toll- free number to find the location of the truck, to be within 35 miles. The location was within 10 miles, but there were no 10-foot trucks available. I was given a 17-foot truck at no extra charge ($857). So far so good, I suppose.

Then the rains began. The passenger side of the truck leaked like a sieve. Of course the cargo compartment leaked as well…a few boxes on the floor were wet. And this was a truck with only 24000 miles on it. Upon closer inspection of the contract, it was noted that U-Haul vans are water-resistant, not water-proof. My bad. Also adding to the discomfort of the ride were non-reclining seats and a console that lacked logic: one cup holder for a three person cab, no level surfaces or “cubbies” for toll change, and a cavernous pit to hide for the duration of the trip whatever you had the misfortune to place in it. For good measure, the power plug (nee cigarette lighter) was inoperable.

Drop-off location was within 15 miles from my final destination, in a somewhat frightening part of town.

U Haul is not friendly U Haul

I have never been satisfied with a rental from Uhaul. I have rented both trucks and from Uhaul. Since U Haul has no customer focus, rude employees, and damaged equipment I have been forced to use other rental companies. Unfortunately I had to rent a trailer from Uhaul this past time since they were the only company with an enclosed trailer.

The store hours on the door said they opened at 7:00, however the employees were late for work and told me I couldn’t rent anything until 7:30, they needed to check in the equipment. An hour later after the couple before me resolved their issue as they prepared to move across the country and Uhaul couldn’t locate the car trailer the couple was promised. I rented the trailer for local use with a return on the following day to the same location. The quoted rental fee was $9.95 plus reservation fees. I returned the trailer the following day after business hours.

I HATE BUDGET TRUCK RENTAL U Haul

I just moved to Florida, from Oregon. I reserved a 15′ truck and a car hauler about a month and a half in advance. I Called to verify the price 2 days before the pick-up date. They told me the price that was quoted when i reserved the truck. I asked the customer service rep if that was the total price of the truck and trailer out the door from the dealer, they said yes. So, I go to the dealer, they don’t have my trailer there. They charged me $385 more then the quoted price. I had to get a trailer from another dealer. The gas tank wasn’t full, so he gave me 12 extra moving blankets, like that covers gas with these prices. I get the trailer, go home and call customer service, being I was upset about the extra cost. They tell me that when you reserve equipment that it states in the contract it is not always available. When you make a reservation, it should be available, or what is the point. They said call me after you reach or destination and we will take care of the extra charges when you truck has been checked in. I barely get into California and the truck starts over-heating. Luckily I had a friend that lives in California, because I was STUCK there for 2 days waiting for another truck. They brought me another truck, I transferred my belongings to the new truck without any help from Budget. This new truck didn’t have a full tank of gas neither, but they did upgrade me from a 15′ to a 24′, since their mechanic said that the 15′ couldn’t pull a car hauler that many miles.. I finally get back on the road and 2 days later, I get a flat tire on the trailer, I call there 24 hour roadside assistance, and it took them 6 1/2 hours to come replace the tire, while I was sitting in the desert. I finally get to Florida, return the truck, and the person their didn’t know how to check it in. I payed cash for the truck/deposit. I ask for my deposit back, and they said, we will send you a check, it will take up to 30 days to get my truck. After the person in Oregon, told me my cash would be available at the time of drop off. I dropped the truck off on July 9, and I still have not yet received my deposit, nor have they checked my truck in. I have called and talked to customer service repeatedly, and all they tell me is to call the dealer where I dropped the truck off at. NOTHING BUT A HEADACHE. So, I decided I am going to take Budget Truck Rental to small claims court for a FULL REFUND, because I am tired of waiting for these greedy people to get their act together.

A NATIONAL DISGRACE U Haul

I made a reservation one week in advance for a move I was making a little at the last moment. I had gotten a new job and they wanted mu there pretty soon. After making the reservation on line, I received e-mail notification that they would contact me within 24 hours. They did not and I contacted them. I was then told that someone would call me the day before I was to pick-up the truck to schedule pick-up. They never called, so I called that night. They said that they would call that morning. They never called. I called around 11:00. They said to wait, they had some things coming in. The never called. I called at 3:30. They then told me that they could not guarantee that I would get a truck that day. I could not believe what I was hearing. I called back at 6:00 and said that I was getting very nervous because I had a final inspection on my apartment in Detroit the next morning at 11:00. They could not possibly have cared less. The first call I got from the dealer was at 7:04 PM informing me that I was not getting a truck that day, and that they could not promise that I would get one tomorrow either. I was shocked and horrified.
