RattleTrap! U Haul
I was pressed into service by my wife to rent a truck to move some modular office panels and equipment to several locations. The dealer had the truck ready for me, but I was immediately concerned about the reliability of this vehicle. The ride was very rough and the engine sounded as though it was about to self destruct at 35 m.p.h.. It was a hot and humid day and when I tried to use the A/C, I was not certain that open windows might not be more effective. The truck did, with much noise and complaining (The radio was junk as well.), make the three-stop trip.
After the equipment was relocated and I was certain that the interior was sufficiently clean, I folded the blankets and put them back in the wobbly rack on the wall. I closed and locked the door and drove the thirty miles back to the dealer and left it with a full tank of diesel fuel($13.00 for 109 miles!). I left the truck keys in the drop box and expected a $100.00 invoice. The dealer charged me $50.00 plus tax because the blanket rack must have shaken off the wall (no surprise there!) on the return trip. After several futile attempts to rectify this with the dealer, and after numerous requests for a U-Haul rep. to return calls, I finally did speak with a rep. who indicated that unless I purchased their “Safe Move” insurance, any damage at all was chargeable. The renting agent alluded to the insurance as being for my property and not protection against a truck that was about to shake itself to death. I will never again do business with either U-Haul or this agent.
