Unfortunately, I have had the pleasure of moving five times in the last five years, and each time with a U-Haul. There were good and bad points to each event, and I think that my experiences are typical of others.

The first question is why consider U-Haul at the start. Generally, they are well known and, with the spread of rental agencies from used car lots and gas stations to company owned offices, they are convenient. They seem cheap with a twenty dollar all day rental fee. Some also offer additional services like storage and tow bar rental. With name recognition and availability, why wouldn”t someone look into renting from U-Haul?

Unfortunately, there are several reasons not to look at U-Haul. The proliferation of rental offices also means that they are poorly staffed. This means that the counter help is often uninformed and service can be questionable. When renting a truck for a one-way trip to New Hampshire from Atlanta, the counter person was trying to figure out how much the mileage cost was going to be. He couldn”t seem to find New Hampshire in any of his price books and asked me what it was near. Also, expect to wait in a line because of slow or non-existent counter help. I have been in more then one U-Haul that I wasn”t sure would be able to stop and with obvious mechanical defects. All of the trucks have gotten me from start to finish without a phone call to U-Haul for roadside service. One of the things that I have done when an item too big for my car has to be moved is to rent a van. These tend to be close to new and in good condition, and big enough to move a room if packed well. If a small box truck is booked, expect to see something that looks like it has made several moves in a war zone.

The number of rental agencies has also decreased the number of vehicles available at each. There is a good chance that, if someone is looking for a truck on short notice, especially from a smaller agent, they will be out of luck. We have a large company owned center in our city, and still there is a chance that something will not be available until the afternoon, which means that either there is a rush to load and unload the truck, or it will sit in a driveway overnight, adding to the charge.

The advertised cost of the rental is also deceiving. While the daily rate is low, the mileage rate seems to be the bulk of the bill. Keep in mind that a long move might not be as cost effective as the daily rate appears. Also, here in New Hampshire, I have been told that the renter has to take the insurance. This is another large and unexpected expense.

Finally, make sure that any damage to the truck is noted before it is driven off the lot, and that the gas gauge actually reflects what the paperwork shows. More then once I have gotten into a truck with the paperwork showing a full tank, and the gauge reading quite a bit less then full. If it isn”t pointed out before driving away, the paperwork is right and the renter is wrong.

U-Haul can be a good option if the moves are short, the vehicle is inspected for safety and serviceability, and there is one close to the start and finish. Keep in mind that there will probably be nothing available on short notice or weekends, and that paperwork will have to be checked for accuracy before leaving the lot. Also, look into other truck rental companies before committing to U-Haul. Its an option, but not the only one, and maybe not the best.
