You need a vehicle with some cargo room, because most likely you’re moving from one home to another. Where do you go?
Well, there’s a few national contenders out there… Penske, Ryder, and U-Haul.
The advantage of U-Haul over the others is price. U-Haul is by far the least expensive of the three… at least that’s the idea you get when you shop around.
U-Hauls come in various sizes… from a small trailer to a huge semi. You usually get a better choice of rentals than the other three… at least that’s the idea you get when you shop around.
The problems arise, though, may make you reconsider your decision to go with the biggest of the big boys on the block.
Problem 1: The vehicle you reserve isn’t always the vehicle you get. U-Haul gives the illusion of a choice. If you opt for that $39.95 a day huge truck, your reservation is suggested. In other words, you may show up the morning of your reservation and discover that there are no $39.95 trucks on the lot that day. However, they’ll be more than happy to rent you the $29.95 a day truck, which they have a plethora of. "Okay," you think, "No problem. I guess we’ll have to make a second trip."
This leads to the next problem.
Problem 2: All that mileage really adds up quick! If you’re doing a local move, you are paying something in the neighborhood of $0.80/mile. If you can’t get your whole load in one trip, like you expected with the $39.95 truck, then you’ve now at least doubled your mileage costs, which can easily surpass the $10.00 you think you’re saving by renting the smaller truck.
Problem 3: Those extras! You better bring your own blankets to protect that hardwood furniture you own, because if you use the ones that come with the truck, that’s another $5.00 tacked onto the rental bill. Need to use that hand-truck to help move the boxes? That’ll run you another $15.00. Also, you have to bring the truck back with a full tank of gas, otherwise, you’re buying it at nearly 2-1/2 times the going rate for a gallon of gas.
The last problem has to do with something I am very familiar with: Insurance.
If you think your auto insurance will cover the damage to a U-Haul, think again. Most auto insurance policies state they will only pay for damage to a temporary passenger vehicle. A U-Haul truck is a commercial vehicle, and is not subject to coverage by your personal automobile policy. U-Haul is very aware of this, and charges you an ungodly sum to insure their beat-up trucks against damage.
While U-Haul might be the best deal while shopping around, you may wish to check into a different company that will guarantee you the truck you reserve, and not tack on every extra under the sun.
