Who doesn’t know U-Haul? They’re all over the streets, especially in college towns. My parents had two good moving experiences for them, so when it came time for my husband and me to change apartments, I called U-Haul.

I called the U-Haul 800 number, which I guess was my first mistake. I made the reservation over a month in advance because I knew that the weekend I was moving was a big one for moving all over town. I spoke with a reservation agent, whose name was Jeremy. Jeremy said that my reservation was GUARANTEED on the date (but not the time) I needed the truck, otherwise I would not have given Jeremy my credit card number to put down a deposit on the truck. About two weeks later, I received a letter from U-Haul stating my reservation number, further confirmation to me that I actually had a reservation with U-Haul. Ha, ha.

About a week before I was set to move, I called U-Haul just to check on the time when my truck would be available. I was on hold for over 20 minutes before I was informed that oh, dear, U-Haul overbooked for my area. There would be at least a 48 hour delay on the truck I had "reserved".

The reason I reserved this truck over a month in advance was that I had to be apartment-less overnight. One lease ended at noon on Saturday, the next began at noon on Sunday. There was nowhere for me to go with all my belongings if I did not have a truck. I was VERY upset to find out that I did not really have a reservation. I called EVERYONE I COULD REACH AT U-HAUL, from every local or near-local store I could find in the phone book to every regional to every national customer service person I could speak with. I just kept saying, "Okay, can I speak with your supervisor?"

Eventually, I ended up speaking with Randy Dickson, the marketing president for Iowa. He could not have cared less about my situation. He offered me 20% off on my 48 hours late or later truck. I cancelled my "reservation". I contacted the Better Business Bureau and requested a written apology from U-Haul. What I received was a snooty little memo indicating that they were sorry I didn’t get a truck, but U-Haul was the best in the world with thousands of satisfied customers every year. I let it drop. This company is from Hell. They overbook their trucks so that they are certain they will be making as much money as possible.
