After being cheated by Ryder the last time I rented a truck, I thought I’d try U-Haul. Next time I’ll go for Penske; they cost more, but I think it will be worth it.
There are lots of thorough reviews on this site, so I’ll keep this brief.
U-Haul promised us a truck on a certain day for a 500 mile one-way move, but couldn’t say what time of day. That made it very difficult to arrange to hire help to load the truck. U-Haul promised to call by 5pm the day before (short notice!), giving us the time we could get the truck, but did not call. When we called them, they just brushed us off.
We did get the truck eventually though. It was as everyone else here described - old and junky. It was also absolutely FILTHY. Windshield covered with mud and bugs, steering wheel untouchable, etc. In the one apparent attempt at preparation, the floor mat was sprayed heavily with a slippery substance resembling Armor-All, which of course transferred quickly to my shoes, and from there to the brake pedal (a safety hazard) and to my kitchen floor (a mess).
The odometer read 80,000 miles, but there’s no way to tell how many times it has gone around. The air conditioner worked; the radio did not, nor the windshield wipers. The steering was very loose and sloppy - it took constant attention to keep the truck in one lane. The mirrors were loose and wouldn’t stay in position, a real hazard when driving a truck.
The gasoline engine had adequate power, but burned or leaked TWO (!) quarts of oil on that 500 mile trip. Braking was not great, but the truck was fully loaded. Mileage for this 17-foot truck was about 9-10 mpg.
Driving this thing, I felt a bit like Pa Joad or Jed Clampett. OK, not that bad, but you get the idea.
On the other hand, at least it didn’t stop running. The tires were decent. It was easily loaded and unloaded, as advertised.
My recommendation is to pay the couple hundred dollars more it takes to get better equipment and guaranteed availability time somewhere else.
