I reserved a cargo van through the 800 number and headed to the location the same day to pick it up. There was terrible traffic, so I called to let them know I would be arriving shortly after they closed. I arrived 15 minutes after closing, and the cleaning person told me everyone had gone home. 2 hours each way in traffic wasted, but that was only the beginning.
The next morning I picked up the van and headed to San Diego from LA for a 4 day work event. After arriving in San Diego, we realized that the headlights did not work. One was completely out, and the other pointed in a direction nowhere close to lighting up the path in front of us.
Being 2 hours away from where we rented it, I saw no point in calling about the problem, so we just accepted the fact that we would not be able to drive at night. Upon further inspection of the vehicle the next day, I realized that it had clearly been in an accident and the headlight problem was a result of it.
When I returned the vehicle, I explained the issue to the rep at the location. Without being specific, I told them that I thought a significant discount was in order for renting me a vehicle that had been wrecked and had no working headlights. The only response I got was that I should have called to report the problem as soon as I noticed it. Call me crazy for thinking this would accomplish nothing given the fact that I was in another city. I can only assume that they expected me to arrange a repair on my time for damage that I did not cause. I told the employee that I would just take it up with my credit card company to which she quickly replied “There’s no need for attitude.”
Before contacting Amex, I tried to take the issue up with managers and regional office contacts with no success. No calls returned. I was told to call the local office and “file a complaint” with the same person I had dealt with to begin with!
The dollar amount of the issue is somewhat inconsequential. The time I’ve spent on it is worth more, but it’s the principle of it that matters. The end result is that I will never again use U-Haul, and as a business owner will share that sentiment with anyone else I know in need of a moving truck or trailer.
I have had great luck with Enterprise, who rents newer, professional looking all-white cargo vans (not wrapped with advertising) with unlimited mileage and more importantly employees who for the most part actually know how to communicate with a customer.
