The reviews on this site had me worried, but our moving experience was just fine, once we ditched the reservation that was made with the National Center. The National Center told us that no trucks were available during mid month in Brooklyn (which has to have more than 50 UHaul centers!) They were then unable to give us anything in writing confirming the reservation, so we just walked to the local center, and had a reservation and written documentation instantly.

After that, things went well, other than a couple of minor points. The mirrors weren’t tightened enough to withstand air resistance at highway speed, but my toolbox was handy and they were easy to tighten. I also lost the left turn signal at some point during our trip, which was almost 650 miles. Everything else was exactly as advertised. I would not hesitate to use Uhaul again if necessary.

The keys are planning, doing what you say you will, in terms of pick up and drop off, and (I can’t stress this enough) dealing directly with your local center.

One last thing: If you are renting in the NYC area, be aware that the Brooklyn Bridge, the FDR, parts of 5th Ave, Riverside Drive, Central Park, and the Pallisades Parkway are all off-limits to your Uhaul truck. It makes navigating a challenge. I found out the difficult way.
