We have moved more times than I can count. Each time, we rent a U-haul truck to get us where we are going. My husband is an expert mover, and can do it in record time. That is if the U-haul would cooperate.
U-haul companies put a governor on larger trucks to keep you from going over the recommended speed for the truck size. When we moved from Connecticut to Florida, it took us over 24 hours of straight driving to arrive. The top speed of the truck was 45 m.p.h.. Uphill was torture on us because the truck would slow down to 30 - 40 m.p.h. and everyone that we had passed on the downhill would pass us again. It was definitely slow and steady all the way.
Though, the trucks don’t achieve the posted speed limits, they are very comfortable to ride in. They handle well and the ride is rather smooth. U-haul prices aren’t to bad either. We paid $35.00 per day for a one way trip. Of course, they do have a per mile charge as well. This tends to take the price up quite a bit, especially if you are traveling over 1000 miles.
Most people would probably ask why we continue to rent from U-haul if we are 100% satisfied with their service. The answer to that is reliability. In our experience, we have never had a problem with any of the trucks that we have rented from them. They have always gotten us to our destination without a hitch. In my eyes, it is a compromise. I’ll trade speed for vehicle reliability anyday!
