First the online system directed me to a location that was closed. I showed up there to find an empty lot. I tried calling the next closest office and no one answered the phone. I then drove home and looked up the 800 number online. I called that number and had to wait on hold for more then 20 minutes. They did have a truck for me at the next nearest U-Haul branch. I waited about 15 minutes in line. When I went out to start the vehicle, it would not start! I had to go back in and wait another 15 minutes in line. They jump started the truck with an identical truck sitting right next to it. Rather than give me the truck that was working they sent me off with the one that hadn’t started. When I said, “don’t you think it’s likely this truck will stall again?”. They said, “oh no, it’s just been sitting for a few days. That’s why it didn’t start. It will be fine.” I’m a fool for not arguing with him, but I set my doubts aside and headed off. When I got to my destination the truck stalled as I was backing into the driveway and could not be restarted! While I was waiting for the tow truck a neighbor stopped by and said he had rented a U-Haul truck a couple of weeks before from a different branch than the one I’d used and the same thing happened to him!
When I got back to the U-Haul office I went in to tell them what happened. As I waited in line the people behind me mentioned that the engine light was on in the truck they had rented. When I got up to the front of the line (another 15 minute wait) the guy said “no charge”. When I got my credit card bill however, there was a charge for $25.16. I have tried repeatedly to reach them about it and have gotten no response besides and auto reply to my emails and a lot of waiting on hold when I called to finally be told that someone would have to call me back which they never did.
Fortunately this happened on a Saturday and I still had Sunday to try and get the move accomplished. I went to Budget the next day and they were great! While I was at Budget getting a nice new truck, U-Haul was leaving a nasty voicemail at my house saying that if I didn’t bring back their truck on time they were going to charge me a fee.
U-Haul may have been a good company at one time, but they have completely gone down the tubes. I would not ever risk going with them again at any price.
