I needed to rent a “4 wheels off the ground” car carrier from a Uhaul in Moorestown New Jersey over the past weekend. What resulted was the worst consumer experience in recent memory. Lee, evidently the manager, was abrupt, rude, and difficult to understand over the phone. I had hoped to secure the trailer on Wednesday as Saturday morning I wanted one to be there. Lee suggested he call me back. He never did. 5 hours later I called back and made the arrangement.
On Saturday I went there, and to make an excruciating story slightly shorter, here’s what happened.
1) Lee never entered my order into the computer. I was not listed, even though I had given the entirety of my life’s story for them to plug into their computer.
2) There were no trailers listed as being on the lot. (Oddly enough, I found some out back, which seemed not to be in their system)
3) They wouldn’t rent it to me because I wished to tow a truck that according to them was never built.
4) When they called the central office, they found out that they could rent it to me, provided that I could prove that the wheels were more than 21″ apart. Since my Jeep can fit a 4′ by 8′ sheet of plywood and the wheels are outside of the bed, I suggested that the wheels were at least 48″ apart. This was not found to be an acceptable analysis until I argued long enough.
5) Since I said that the wheels were at least 48″ apart, they decided that I couldn’t rent the trailer unless I could prove that the wheels were not too far apart!
6) Since I couldn’t show them the truck without towing it to them, and I couldn”t tow it to them without the trailer, I was up the creek it would seem. (This after 2 hours of waiting in line followed by this barrage of ignorance).
Finally after many hours and much yelling, they agreed to rent me the trailer (that they had already agreed to on Wednesday).
Sadly, I did not get off that easily, however, as unbeknownst to me, they charged me for a cord to connect the trailer to my car. I found this out when I went to return the trailer and they said that I got to keep that part, they wouldn’t take it back, and there was nothing I could do.
Uhaul has a terrible computer system, idiots for employees, and if I simply had more free time I would be spending it telling the whole world to avoid these lying, cheating, disgusting bastards.
