The Somerville, Mass U-Haul branch assured me they had a trailer hitch specifically designed for my BMW 528 wagon, and that it came with the appropriate wiring harness.
The trailer hitch kit suggested that the installer call the dealer to avoid difficulties, but they went ahead with the installation and made a terrible botch of the job. Besides incompetence, they refused to do the job right when it became apparent that they had distorted the back bumper in installing the hitch. And while the manager had said he would discount the installation cost as a way of acknowledging the damage done to my car, when it came time to settle up, he backed out of his promise. By then it was past seven o’clock in the evening and I had to leave, taking that unsatisfactory installation as just a cheesy piece of work.
But the next day when I hooked up the trailer, and connected the wiring harness, I discovered the lights didn’t work correctly either. So I went back to the Somerville U-Haul and spent another five hours waiting for them to fix it. In the event, it became clear they didn’t know to fix the problem and finally, past six p.m. now, they finally tried to get help from BMW mechanics. But they didn’t identify themselves as U-Haul agents to the people at the other end of the line and, probably because all the mechanics had long since gone home, got no usable advice.
So, once again, I was stuck with lousy workmanship, but now also with an unusable trailer hitch because their wiring harness won’t work.
And the conclusion to this dismal story is that customer service at U-Haul is a joke when it comes to conflict resolution, with the Somerville manager actually lying about the amount I was charged.
So, if you are thinking about having a trailer hitch installed, I can’t recommend U-Haul, and I would particularly recommend against their Somerville, Mass operation.
