When I received a $7,000 bid to move our stored goods from Oregon to California, we decided we would hire to move goods into a rental truck and trailer, and transport them ourselves, and utilize at the other end to unload, which would result in a cost of around $2,700, figuring in one way airfare, and move in/out expenses. This substantial savings, made it seem worthwhile.

We first searched the website of several companies, and only U-Haul had truck and trailer combinations large enough to haul all our treasures. The website was fairly easy to use, helpful, and we reserved a truck close to the airport where we would be flying in to pick up. I followed it up by telephone confirmation, so that we could be assured of obtaining a 26′ truck and companion trailer at the location. While they could not promise the close in airport location, they guaranteed the truck would be available at one of their locations in the city, and they would confirm 24 hours in advance the exact location and pick up time. I reiterated the importance of having the truck available exactly as promised, since we were spending a substantial sum on a one-way airline ticket (ouch!), and that we would have to rely on a taxi to take us to their pickup location. They assured us it would be easy.

The day before, we did receive a call and were told of the location. It was about 7 miles from the airport, so not too terribly inconvenient.

We left the next morning, and arrived in the city, and taxied to the location. When we arrived, they had no truck or trailer as promised, and said the nearest one was 126 miles away. After we used some pretty strong words and threats, since we were stranded, suddenly the truck unit became available.

Now for the truck. It was a 26′ unit as promised. As we drove away, and entered the freeway for our pickup good location, the truck would not drive over 43 mph in an empty condition. This concerned us, and we phoned, and we told that was not abnormal. When we arrived at our location, we tried to set the parking brake as it was on a slight incline, only to find there was no working parking brake, and the truck could not be parked safely. We phoned again, and were told they were sorry, but that there were no other trucks available. We expressed our concern of driving this dangerous rig 1100 miles, and they agreed to send a repair person the next day.

The next morning the arrived to assist us. We could not start the truck. The had to leave, and we had to pay a minimum charge for them.

We phoned U Haul again, and told them we did not want the unit, and they could just come haul it off. The insisted we were responsible for the price of $444.

We are contesting this on our credit card and do not intend to pay for such shoddy service and equipment.

We have since called Penske, and had to have friends drive us 90 miles to their nearest location, but they have shown professionalism and quality equipment.

I would be extremely wary of using U Haul for anything but a local move.
