I recently rented a truck from Uhaul. Sadly enough, I did not have the foresight to check online and read these reviews first. My experience with the company was entirely atrocious and exasperating. Were I to go into full detail of all the times I contacted Uhaul in an effort to get them to fulfill their obligation to me, it would go on for pages.

The crux of the matter is, my reservation with Uhaul (placed ten days in advance) was completely disregarded with no notification from the company whatsoever. Of course, I had made plans based on my misplaced good faith that the company would keep its promise. I was finally able to obtain a truck on a second reservation (even though my original reservation should logically, or at least theoretically, have been honored first), but was expected to retrieve the truck from a dealership over 80 miles away. Upon retrieving the long-awaited vehicle, I was dismayed - but not particularly surprised - to find it had no working taillights. At no time was I offered compensation, discount, or even a simple apology for the extreme inconvenience I experienced; notwithstanding that I twice complained to customer service and filed with the Better Business Bureau. Suffice it to say, their “word” means absolutely nothing, and they perceive themselves as having no accountability to the consumer whatsoever. Moving is a stressful enough experience without dealing with a company that treats its own source of income so cavalierly.

Here’s a simple suggestion: before you rent with UHaul, try this little experiment. Call their customer service line (1-800-789-3638) and see for yourself how long you are kept on hold before speaking to a representative. That will be an archetype of the U-haul experience in a nutshell.
