U-Haul rented me a defective truck that killed two pets, and almost my unborn child! They gave me the run around, refused to repair or replace, even though I had paid for the insurance. They did not want to pay for the medical bills. The truck I rented leaked carbon monoxide. My husband and I were not feeling well, and thought at first it was the stress of moving. I was four months pregnant at the time. At a stop, I noticed my two cats were foaming at the mouths, and my two pet rodents were DEAD!
We found a rest area, got the cats out of the truck and got some fresh air. I called U-Haul and explained the situation. I was told it was probably my pregnancy or the heat from the broken air conditioning. They agreed to send out a technician. I refused to get back in to the truck, and asked for them to take us to the nearest hospital. They took us to a hotel, and said if I wanted to go to the hospital, I would have to find my own ride.
The technician returned the next morning and found a four inch gap in the seal to the "doghouse". That is the hump in the middle of the cabin that covers the engine. I was shocked. Thinking all was better we continued down the road.
After a short time I got sicker. My husband noticed me getting severely disorientated and following the next hospital sign. After being discharged from the emergency room, I called again. I was told no one wanted to come out, and to find a hotel. This was on July 3rd. Needless to say, I could not find one anywhere. With no other options, we finally finished the drive to Florida. There I was seen at a better hospital. I spent the rest of my pregnancy going through test after test not knowing if my daughter was even going to be born. U-Haul refused to cooperate and pay my medical bills. All I asked was for them to reimburse me for their death-trap, and to pay for the two hospital visits.
I took the truck to a mechanic friend who took readings. He found there to be negative oxygen levels in the cabin AFTER their "repair".
I urge you, it is far safer to hitchhike with your family cross-country then to get in a U-Haul!
