They will stick you where they can! U Haul

How have these guys stayed in business? U Haul Uhaul is not at the top of my list right now, this is now the second time they've wronged me and it will be the last. We've recently moved o...

I recently went to U-Haul because I needed to rent a trailer. I must say that I was very disappointed in their service. Here’s the reasons why:

First, I called their 800 number to find out the nearest location from the point I was at. I had to answer this slew of questions like my name, my address, my vehicle type, etc. Then their rep went on to ask for a credit card number. My question was what for? I only want to know where the nearest location was. The comeback was to ensure availability. I told the rep that I wasn’t sure if I was going through them, and all I wanted at that point was the nearest location address. She kept telling me how I needed to give a credit card number to ensure availability of a rental. I finally got agitated and told her that I would find out myself since she refused to give it to me.

When I did find the location, I went in to talk to the clerk to explain to him what I wanted and what I needed it for. He seemed like he wanted to be helpful. He told me the different size available and their cost. Well, we were only moving a king size bed. So we requested the smallest and cheapest trailer available. Well surprise, surprise, (even though we saw a whole bunch of them) none were available. They were all rented out and were due to be picked up that day (although they closed in like 10 minutes).

We ended up renting the next larger size to the small one we originally wanted. We weren’t too thrilled with the price, but we were running out of time. We had to get it or get stuck. Well we had to pay a deposit (small amount of $20) and the price of the trailer. We also had an additional charge because my truck didn’t have a tow ball and I had to purchase one. So we figured, okay, well we needed a tow ball anyway. So, what the heck.

Now here is where I really started to get peeved. After they hooked us all up, and we paid for the rental and ball, the manager then says, "Did you purchase the wire harness?" My question was, "What harness?" He then told me that we could not take the trailer unless we had the wires connected to our blinkers and to do that we needed a wiring harness. I was mad. Here we thought we were on our way, and they found a way not only to detain us longer but to add more cost.

I really didn’t feel like arguing with them so I said, "Fine. Hook the da** thing up. Ring me up so I can leave!" Forty-five minutes later, they get it hooked up. They decided to have a trainee do it for us while they supervised. When he was done, the manager (who was supervising the trainee) said, "Boy, I am such a good trainer!" I felt like saying, "Well then maybe you should start training how to be faster!" So we are off. Totally, it cost us about $100 with a $20 refundable deposit when we returned the trailer.

We got home, unloaded our new bed, and waited for morning to return the trailer and get back our deposit. My husband said that he would take it back and get the deposit. I thought that would be fine since there was no reason for all of us to get into the truck to go and drop off the trailer.

My husband left and was gone for about a half hour, which I found funny since the U-Haul drop off was only three blocks away from our home and he was driving! When he returned, he was shaking his head. I asked him what was wrong. He told me that the reason it took so long was because the guy at the drop off said he was really busy and he had my husband to unhook and disconnect the trailer from our truck. I was appalled. The only thing my husband could say was, "Well at least we got our $20 back…"

I will never go through U-Haul again. From the 800 number customer service to their actual service, it is just really bad. It is over price and definitely over-rated in my opinion. U-Haul needs to make some major improvements on their service before I would even consider looking them up!
