U Haul messed up our lives U Haul U-Haul rented out us a defective truck for $1500 that spit exhaust into the cabin where all of our belongings were for the 3 day trip from I...

I’ve moved 11 times in the last 3 years. Mostly to new apartments - finally now to the first house I’ll own. Only once during all those moves did I use Uhaul. It was horrible.

First, the good points in their favor: they are everywhere . . . which was a big factor in choosing them since I was up my stuff and my wife’s stuff just after we’d gotten married and had decided to move away from friendly Madison to Chicago. So, what other company could we choose with a branch right in Madison and another 3 blocks away from our place in Chicago? The truck itself was serviceable and large enough that we only had to make one trip. Hmmmm, anything else good I can say before I lay out the miseries of my experience? Nope.

ah ha! The bad . . . I swore after this was over that I’d find a way to get back at Uhaul and you, whoever you are reading this, can help me spread the negative karma.

1. Reservations were cancelled. It was saturday when we found out. Our new landlords were going to meet us Sat night to give us keys; all our household goods were already packed in boxes. We couldn’t make it without the van. Raising hell, after 4 hours, we got a truck. Not the one we wanted - larger, more expensive. They didn’t even reimburse us for the cost difference. I guess the van they had expected to rent us hadn’t been returned yet.

2. Checking the vehicle out. They did the hard sell on us over an insurance policy on the vehicle even though we knew and had verified with our insurance agency that the vehicle would be covered. Refusing to rent it to us without the insurance policy, the guy who tried to sell it to us referred us up to his boss and the boss, who took about 45 minutes to arrive on site, wouldn’t verify our condition report on the van. Finally we got his signature and left the Uhaul store - 6 hours later than we had wanted and still without our boxes and crates loaded for the journey.

3. Checking it back in. The service center close to us in Chicago was closed, even though we’d called in advance to check on their hours. It was Sunday - we thought they’d be closed but they said they wouldn’t be when we called. However, come Sunday when we arrived there was no one at the location. To be sure that we didn’t get charged for an extra day we went to another Uhaul location in Chicago, they couldn’t take the vehicle so we finally left the vehicle in the parking lot of the original check-in location and slid the keys in the after hours return box. Monday we came back to get and sign the paperwork and to make sure that we were there to argue with the guy about any damage he thought we had done to the truck. It was amazing that in every Uhaul store the employees were at best unsympathetic and at worst rude and antagonistic. Now, what really irritated us when we checked back in was that - after we had to fight to get them to sign the report on the few nicks and scrapes we identified in Madison, the check-in guy got out a step ladder to look at the top of the truck, a dolly to look under it and marked every little nick and scratch. Eventually we had to write a letter to the corporate headquarters protesting this treatment in order to get back our security deposit.

Final advice: if, for some reason you must use Uhaul, make sure when you check it out that you know what insurance you need and make double sure to thoroughly check and document the condition of the vehicle! I may have just run into some particularly ornery Uhaul employees, but - since they were equally rude in Madison and Chicago, it seemed more like a corporate trend than an ugly coincidence.
