Hi there,
Schlamozzel here with another Slumlord Brand (TM) “Epinion” on another product / service that really delivers… HEADACHES
As many of you, my faithful readers, know I am a professional SLUMLORD by trade. I’ve recently completed the purchase of yet another slum. This time the entire place is to be completely renovated before any tenants will be moved in. The property was a bank forclosure also known as an “REO”. So I needed a big truck to move all of my tools, equipment, materials and assorted *chuzerai to the site. Enter my experience with U-Haul
The Basics
This company provides rental vans, trucks varying in size from 12 feet to 24 feet, boxes, packing material, some self storage facilities and also sells trailer hitches. Its business model is friendly to the do it yourself / tight budget set.
My Experience
With all my other ducks in a row the time came to pack up the *michigas and make for the new property. I called a local U-Haul location for truck availability and pricing. For my needs a 14 foot truck was recommended. This was $19.95 + 65 cents per mile for local use.
I had:
2 stoves
1 refrigerator
1 dishwasher
1 cook top
1 wall oven
1 bathroom vanity
3 bathroom sinks
5 10 foot long sections of counter top
1 cast iron radial arm saw (an oldie for sure)
1 mountain of assorted power and hand tools (many of which I’ve written about here) and some other sundry items.
With the truck inside were 6 packing blankets and a medium duty hand truck. These were available for use for an additional fee of $10.00
How well the truck worked
I got the truck on the road. Immediately I noticed it was nearly impossible to keep the thing driving straight. Although it had newer tires, the front end was apparently neglected. Then as I approached some traffic that decided to stop for a silly red light I noticed the brake pedal really liked to be pushed. Suddenly the words harder - deeper took on a whole new meaning for me. I slammed my hand on the horn to warn those in front of me of impending doom, but alas, the bloody horn didn’t work!
By the grace of God Almighty nobody got hit / hurt. So like the stubborn old Schlamozzel I am I continued on with my task. What an idiot.
After another F.U.B.A.R. situation (another story for another time) I got to where the mother load was waiting. We proceeded to load up, only to realize that the 10 foot lengths of counter top would not fit. You see, the 14 foot long measure is from the back door to the front wall. But the front wall is only 1/2 the way from ceiling to over the driver’s compartment. So I could not put the tops in without a flat place to set the material.
So we loaded almost all of the other items, except the cast iron saw, and made for our next destination. A self storage shed! By this time, the snow began to fly and the road to the new location would become too treacherous for this crew to travel. Especially in this “has been” truck.
I turn on the lights for safety and switch on the wipers. Now the alternator gage is waving and dancing back and forth. So we get to the storage facility, unload the truck and limp it back to the U-Haul rental establishment.
Guess what they did for me
Immediately upon entering I announced to the manager that this vehicle violates several operational safety regulations and should never have been placed in the hands of a consumer.
For this I was offered the option of paying by cash or leaving the rental on my credit card.
Well, that is about all I have for information regarding this “service”. By now I’m certain you gather that I’m just a little less than impressed.
Thank you for reading! Please take a moment to rate this review and leave a comment if you can.
Cheers,
Schlamozzel
