When I moved from Chicago to Washington, DC, my fiance and I could not fit all of our combined belongings into my Pathfinder. We decided to rent a U Haul trailer to attach to the back of my SUV for the roughly 700-mile drive. I reserved a trailer of the appropriate size in advance and was told (based on the type of car I had) all I needed to do was show up to pick it up.
When I arrived on the day before our move, it turned out my trailer hitch was not the right type to fit the U Haul trailer. Well, I am a little rushed at this point and am happy when they have one to install. Price tag? YIKES! $100!!! Not that I had a choice. So I waited the 2 hours while they installed it and attached my trailer. YIKES again! Lucky me, I must have gotten the dingiest, dirtiest, flimsiest trailer they had in stock. For the great price tag of another $120.
On the drive back to our apartment, the doors flew open. I’m going 50 mph down Lake Shore Drive with the trailer doors flapping around!! Good thing I don’t have my belongings in here yet!
Once we loaded the trailer up and got the doors LOCKED, it was a little better. However, I would have liked some information in advance. Maximum speed you could go with this thing was 45 mph. That made for a much longer trip. Backing up was INCREDIBLY difficult, as it tended to fishtail to the sides, so when I got stuck in a parking lot that did NOT loop, it took 2 hours in a bad neighborhood on a sticky summer night to get the car and trailer backed out into the street again. I would advise against renting a U Haul trailer, as they are not worth the trouble!
