First of all, I would like to let everyone know we finally made it back to Texas, thank God. We are safe, and sound, and reunited with our precious baby girl. The main thing I want you to know at this moment is the quality of service, and the quality of equiment we received from the U-Haul company.
Reservations
Reserving equipment is actually very easy. I called the 1-800 number found on the side of the trucks. The customer service rep was very nice and was patient with me as I described my needs. With me talking, and trying to explain what I need (actually what I want) requires a lot of patence. My reservations were placed and in a few days, a comfermation letter was in my mail box with complete discriptions of my reservations. U-Haul gets a **** rating inease of reserving equipment.
Pick up date
I made my reservations about two months prior to our pick up date. The day before I was to pick upour truck, it was sitting at our local U-HAUL dealer. I knew it was mine, since it was just about the biggest vehicle in Lovelock and for some reason, no one but my family has ever moved away.
The only problem I noticed was a tow trailer was attached to the hitch instead of a tow dolly. So then I started to worry. The day of pick up, I go to the bank, retrieve the $1500 to get it, and headed for the dealer. The dealer was sorta friendly. He was one of those type of people that want your money, but not your presence. I asked him about the tow trailer, instead of the dolly, and he replied, " I ran out of dollies, so now you get a trailer." This would have been fine, but I was only going to pay for what I reserved. Stating this fact to the dealer, he replied," Then I guess you will have to drive your car too, huh?" Well, I wound up paying for a trailer instead of a dolly.
My next question was how was the gas milage on the truck. He quoted me 10-12 miles to the gallon with the trailer. If this is suppost to be true I would like to know why I had to spend $750 dollars on fuel. The truck only got 6 miles to the gallon. AAAAHHHH. Major problem.
We took th etruck to the storage buildings, and loaded the truck. Much easier than dealing with the dealer.
For customer service by the local dealer and day of pick up activities, I give ** two stars.
The equipment
The equipment was good, and easy to use. The tow trailer was a breeze to load your car on. The deck on the truck is actually low and easy to load your stuff in to on. the retractable ramp works wonders when using a dolly to load washers and dryers and that sort of thing.
The truck handled suprisingly well. It was equiped with A/C, radio, cloth seats, plenty of leg room, and even enough room for a 32 qt. cooler for easily accessable drinks and snacks. Downside: 6 miles per gallon, and 55 miles per hour.
Although the expense for fuel was unforseen, and the local dealer was a bit sour, the trip and expierence was, overall, pleasant. Not pleasant enough to do it again in the near future.
