I have a very short and simple review to write today. It is about a U Haul truck rental that I had 10 months ago, going from Toledo to Columbus, Ohio. A distance of about 150 miles. I have to admit that for the most part, the reservations process went smoothly. I called my local dealer, made my reservation and gave him my credit card number as a guarantee. I showed up at his gas station on the appointed date and time, and picked up my 26′ truck (yeah..for a single guy..I own tons of stuff). I did take the optional cargo and collision/damage insurance, even though this was a 1981 model year truck with almost 450,000 miles on it. Boy am I glad that I did. After driving the truck to the local diesel station to fill it up for my trip, I noticed an odor of smoke. It almost smelled like burning hair. So after filling it, I took it back to the local U Haul dealer. He examined the truck, and assured me that what I was smelling was coming from the new muffler that had been installed on the truck (I did check this out…under the truck, there was a new muffler). So off I went, problem solved, or so I thought. I took the truck to my home, and with the help of friends I packed it full. So full in fact, that I had to go back to my U Haul dealer and rent a small trailer to tow behind the truck for the contents of my storage shed that was in my back yard. I was really surprised..as they gave me a brand new trailer, fresh from the factory. It is not often that you see anything new in the U Haul fleet.
So the next day, i’m off to my new home in Columbus. It pretty much is all highway driving from start to finish, and the truck was doing reasonably well. The air conditioning was working, the steering was tight, and the brakes worked just fine. But I still smelled that burning smell, and it was getting worse. So I called U Haul, at their toll free number. I gave them my truck number, my location and what I thought was the problem with the truck . The customer service representative transferred me to the nearest U Haul service center who basically told me to drive the truck until it died on me. There was nothing that they could do until it would not run any further, as they had no spare trucks to give me that were the same size as what I had. So I continued on, rather concerned about the chance of breaking down. Well about 25 miles further down the road, the truck died. Not only did it die, but it caught on fire. In fact, the only thing left of the truck by the time that the local fire department got to me, on this rural highway, was the frame, the sheet metal, and the trailer behind. Oh, one more thing was left….the logbook. I had grabbed it out of the truck before it burned, as it had the contact numbers for U Haul in it, along with the insurance card, registration, and a copy of my rental agreement. I gave this logbook to the Highway Patrol officer that showed up, who then proceeded to tell me that the insurance card was expired, the registration was expired, and the safety inspection on the truck was also expired. He then proceeded to write me three uniform traffic citations, in both my name and U Haul’s. I had to go to court the next day, where the rather unsympathetic judge issued fines and court costs to me in the amount of $295.00. He at least did not make them chargeable tickets to my driver’s license, and he advised me to turn the paid court receipt in to U Haul for reimbursement.
I do have to give U Haul credit where credit is due. Their insurance company wrote me a check almost immediately to replace all of the items that were lost when the truck burned. I think that the only reason that they did this, is that I had made a video tape of everything prior to my moving it, just in case something was damaged in transit. I figured that a picture was worth a thousand words…little did I know just how correct I would be. U Haul did eventually repay me for the court fines that I incurred because of their illegal truck. They even refunded me the rental charges, and gave me a letter offering me a free rental at anytime in the future ( which I will never use)for my trouble. However, it took them 6 months and 2 weeks to send me what I was rightfully owed.
