I had the interesting experience of moving some funiture for my Sister from Atlanta to Chicagoland (Joilet). We had a great old bedroom suite that we had absolutely no room for and she wanted it for her home up north.
Since the thing weighs a TON and its HUGE in size, we couldn’t load the thing on a big P/U and ride up there so we rented a truck at the local U HAUL.
Its a GOOD thing that I let HER negotiate the truck because we saved a MINT. There was a guy behind the counter who was trying to get scouts points with her and he practically gave her the truck to go up there.
That’s the advantage of having a guy at the rental counter….Guess I could have gotten the same deal if there had been a gal there!
Unfortunately, in his zeal to jump inside Sis’s pants, he gave her the GASOLINE powered truck INSTEAD of a DIESEL truck.
The truck was clean and functioned nicely. It was fairly new and the air worked too!. It would have been great if we were just going to move stuff across town,. However, when we embarked on our journey North, this supposedly “Great” truck became the “Mother” of ALL EVIL as it savagely attacked mine and Sis’s pocketbook as drove back up to the Windy CIty.
The gas milage was TERRIBLE! This truck had to be getting around 4MPG when you were going DOWNHILL!!!!
We had to stop for a COMPLETE FILLUP at each and EVERY MAJOR town or city over the size of Mayberry.
This otherwise pleasureable drive soon became THE TRAIL OF TEARS as we slowly crept closer to BANKRUPTCY as we dragged this lumbering gas guzzler up to Chicagoland.
DIESEL TRUCKS ARE GREAT AT U HAUL Their Diesel trucks get gas milage that will rival MOST cars! They are ALSO very clean and comfortable. Although, they are a bit noisy from the Diesel engine. Power is not as much either but if you are saving $$$$$$$$$$ then who cares!
GETTTING A NEWER TRUCK WHEN YOU RENT IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST!. Driving U Haul’s OLDER worn out trucks is worse than living in the movie…NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
THEY CREAK, THEY GROAN AND WORST OF ALL…..ALL OF THE ONES I HAD STUNK!!! Also, I had the harrowing experience of having an old U Haul rustbucket without a horn. IT HAD A WIRE THAT WAS SITTING IN THE WELL WHERE THE HORN BUTTON WAS I GUESS YOU HAD TO TOUCH IT AGAINST THE METAL STEM IF YOU NEEDED TO BLOW THE HORN
Hooooo Boy!
There are not a lot of choices with the U Haul trucks, just make sure that the thing is in good repair and that you note any dings and dents that they may try to charge you for. Just like you are renting a regular rental car.
Remember….Newness…Cleanliness and Definately Diesel if you are going anywhere other than a couple of blocks and your experience will be just fine at U Haul.
I use them whenever I have something thats either Too big or too nasty to put in my truck.
For the money (If you are careful) they can’t be beat!
