I cannot believe it has taken me three years to finally get a message across to someone who is listening! I had forgotten all about the Un-professional, under-organized and un-likely experience with U-Haul.
My first house! I am finally moving into a home of my own. OK, I was 37 years old, but this is a big step for a single woman. The American Dream - and what a dream, I was going to move in on my birthday! How exciting could that be. I had a few friends lined up to help me and money to buy KFC snack boxes for everyone. We had been at the house the night before and cleaned it - more importantly, I had gone to the U-Haul center a week before and put down a deposit and reserved a truck.
When I arrived at the U-Haul store/auto parts store, there were two people in front of me. The customer at the counter seemed to be quite disgruntled. As he stormed out of the store, he shared his disgust and colorful comments with the rest of us. I thought, he should have reserved a truck like I did . . .
To make a frustrating story short, as I stepped to the counter with my reservation receipt in hand, the attendant smugly told me that they had no more trucks. I explained to him that my movers were ready today and so was I, also that he had my money! During the most frustrating conversation in which others behind me joined, he said that he was off work one day and someone must have done something to the computer reservation system, it’s a little confusing and he was the one who knew it best. He also told me that there might be some trucks available at another location, but he wouldn’t know because they are independently owned and operated! This was not satisfying! My argument continued as did the individuals behind me. As we were speaking a small truck was driven out of the garage as slated for "being ready". Ready for the home for old trucks! He agreed to give me that one at a discounted price and full tank. I should have left before then.
My movers laughed continuously as we finally reached my new house. Complaining of the lack of air conditioning in the truck - my birthday is in the middle of July! Heat came off the engine and directly into the truck, they got the windows down, slowly as they coaxed the handles. They breaks were challenging as well, even I noticed as they kept a safe distance from my bumper after a few close encounters.
I am sure that these trucks are used continuously, but what is the purpose of the garage they were in. I was so furious at the whole encounter. When we returned the truck, he knew better than to charge me for gas - and I did not fill it back up to where it had been! He had no more courteousness or professionalism on my return and there were more people in line again complaining. I should have warned them. I did however look for their web site to complain, only found pages of other angry customers! I also called the Better Business Bureau. It helped a little. Next time, I will just remodel and stay where I am!
