UHaul: Abysmal Customer Service U Haul

We Came, We Saw, We Got Beat! U Haul After reading some of the reviews on Epinions.com regarding U-haul, I was concerned, to say the least. We were hoping to go with a competito...

Lucky to be alive U Haul I rented a U-Haul trailer which suddenly came off the hitch of my SUV (on smooth highway) and began violently fishtailing. The trailer swung...

I made my reservation online, March 26 2004.

I didn’t get my confirmation call within a week as promised, so I called UHaul and “Oh, yeah, here you are.”

A week before my June 30th move, I called once again just to make sure I was picking up at my preferred location. They reassured me that everything was fine and I could pick up the truck at 9am the day I planned to move.

On June 29th at 4:45pm– the eve of my move– UHaul called me to say they didn’t have a truck for me. I had reserved a 26′ truck, but they didn’t have one available.

The CSR (who was beyond rude) explained that they called to confirm the night before because they didn’t “guarantee” their trucks on one-way rentals. I reminded her that my reservation contract stated they would substitute a truck of equal or greater size at no additional charge if my truck wasn’t available…she apologized flippantly and suggested I contact another rental company.

I ended up calling the regional office and begging for help (nobody else could rent a truck, next-day, of that size in my area). They were able to scrounge up a 17′ truck plus a trailer…which meant that in addition to not being able to utilize the ramp unless we disconnected the trailer, the driving (like backing up) would be more challenging PLUS it was not nearly the same amount of square footage.

We picked up the truck the next morning from West Chicago, Illinois. A nice young lady did the paperwork for us; however, she was alone with her 8-month-old baby working in a dingy, dusty garage so we just signed the paperwork without doing the usual checklist on the truck. The paperwork indicated the gas tank was 3/4 full…we realized about two miles away from the office that it was actually almost empty. This mistake easily cost us at least $30.00 in Diesel.

So, next time you’re driving behind a UHaul and looking at their “Why Pay More?” logo, remember that the answer is this: You want to pay more because you need a truck to actually be available the day you planned to move, and reserving it three months in advance with UHaul apparently guarantees you nothing.

Pay more for better customer service elsewhere. Pay more for something that doesn’t sound like it’s gasping and dying at every intersection. Pay more to avoid high blood pressure.
