We moved my sister from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to St Paul, MN. Our move occurred in January, when the temp was well below freezing (actual temp was about 5 degrees). We picked up the truck at Uhaul, drove to my sister’s apartment, and loaded her stuff. About 4 or 5 miles into our trip on the freeway, the truck broke down. My father somehow managed to get the truck pulled over to the side of the road. The truck would not start, so we had no heat. Luckily, my sister passed by us on the freeway about 15 minutes later and so she stopped. She and my father drove back to the Uhaul place. The guy there was just locking up and going home for the day. The guy was annoyed that we had trouble (as if it was our fault) and gave them a second truck to use. So Sister and Father drove the second truck back to where we were stranded, and we had to park it end-to-end with the broken truck. We then had to transfer ALL the stuff from the old truck to the new truck. Oh, what fun that was on the side of the freeway, with cars wizzing by at 70 mph. Finally we finished and continued our trip. We left the broken truck sitting there and Uhaul had to tow it away a few days later.
Of course my father complained to the top of the chain at Uhaul. Long story short - turns out the problem was that no one ever filled the truck with antifreeze. The previous user had come from the south, so it was not needed before. Talk about a dangerous mistake - we were so lucky that we weren’t stranded for hours in the cold. NEVER USING UHAUL AGAIN!!
