UHaul Saga So hi. I was gone all weekend but now I'm back so I can update you on the oh-so interesting things that happen to me. (Read that with some ...
I signed up with this site solely for the purpose of telling anybody who will listen that Uhaul does not care about you or honor their contracts. Which could put you in trouble like it almost did to me (thanks to Budget for bailing me out at the last minute).
I had read the horror stories about Uhaul and figured the only reason people post is because they had bad experiences so I figured that these reviews were the small minority. Plus, I had rented Uhauls for in-town moves and had little to no problems whatsoever. My opinion has changed to believe that the small minority are people with good experiences.
Let me take an aside and start with the actual Uhaul rental sites. I have visited two seperate sites. The first was a Uhaul center (trucks, storage units, boxes etc.), the foul language and attitude towards the customers there was totally unacceptable. I have worked in retail management and was flabbergasted that the sort of behavior that went on there is tolerated in the slightest. The second place visited was a service garage where I made a last ditch attempt to get a truck for my move, the proprietor of the garage told me to bring $100 cash and he would “take care of me”. When I got there the “bribe” became $200 and the truck he tried to rent me would have killed me. I’ll give him credit that he actually gave me a decent price, but that’s besides the point, my life isn’t worth getting a good deal on a death trap truck.
Getting to the main reason for this review, Uhaul will take a reservation for you for a truck that you may never actually get. Having read the reviews of their on-line and 800 number reservation system I thought it would be best to head down to the local Uhaul (the one with the attrocious customer service). I made a reservation for a 17 foot truck and was asked for a preferred time and place for pickup. I knew up front that there was no guarantee that I would get the truck when requested or at the location requested but the contract stated that they would call me the night before pickup to inform me when and where it would be available. I was ok with that and understood that I might get the truck at 5pm, 50 miles away from my house, not ideal but I was trying to save money by moving myself so it was an inconvenience I could live with.
The night before the move my wife luckily decided to take the initiative to call Uhaul, she was told that our reservation wasn’t for another 2 days later. We had the contract in front of us that had the date requested, they went ahead and changed the date and at this point I suspect is where they wouldn’t have a truck for us. The phone people were extremely rude, and I suspect with no actual proof that they actually went out of their way to make sure we didn’t get a truck.
The day of the scheduled move I called in the morning to check on the progress, I was told they didn’t have anything yet for us and they would call when it became available. Around noon I called again, the person I spoke to this time said he would start looking around for a bigger truck. I think noon the day of the move is a bit late to start looking around, I found a bigger truck myself (read the earlier paragraph about the death truck). Later in the afternoon my wife called and they said we were next in line. At that point I called Budget and got the same size truck for $100 more, but in return got good customer service which was well worth it.
Uhaul never called us back, we purposefully did not call them to see if they would actually call. I am contemplating taking Uhaul to court for breach of contract and will begin writing a letter to them to let them know my displeasure.
Moving is one of the most stressful experiences a person can go through, don’t take a chance with Uhaul on that important day.
