I recently rented a vehicle from one of your Uhaul locations, at 5 Defries Street, Toronto Ontario Canada, on September 1st, 2007, 4pm. I required a moving truck to move one small apartment to a new location not too far from where I was. After numerous warnings from people who have moved with Uhaul, as to the safety of the vehicles, and the customer service, I reluctantly decided to give Uhaul a fair shot. After all, it was a small move over a short distance.
To start, I was given one of the oldest trucks on the lot. A proper inspection must not have been done by staff, because after dark I noticed that one of the tail lights was out. However this is not the issue that concerns me.
I arrived at the Uhaul lot via my father’s car to pick up my reserved truck, and was met in the parking lot by one of the employees. He assured me that he would be right with me. Excellent customer service. My partner and I left the car parked in the lot, beside another vehicle. We received our reserved truck at 4pm, all be it a crappy one. The employee who shall remain nameless reminded me that, since I was booked until after closing, I should park my truck back in the lot, and leave the keys in the drop box. No problem.
The move went off without a hitch, which blew me away since the truck was so crappy, and with all the warnings I received. We returned to the lot with the truck after closing as planned.
After driving all the way across town, we find that our car has been locked within the lot, fenced in, with no contact number, and blocked my numerous other Uhaul vehicles. We are stranded, and unable to get home.
We were forced to drive all the way back across town, wasting more fuel, which we have to pay for. We borrowed a car and drove the truck AND the car back to the lot, just to avoid some of the numerous ridiculous fees associated with just about everything, including keeping the truck until the next day. The car remains locked in the compound. We drive across down AGAIN in the borrowed car, and finally get to bed.
To get the car back the next day, I was forced to ride my bike from halfway across the city, back to the Uhaul location I had already visited numerous times that day, wasting fuel, time, and patience.
The same gentleman greets me in the compound, and mentions how the car was locked in over night. I was rightly furious. When I picked it up, he had made no mention of the compound, or that it is locked up after hours. He made no mention about me parking my car there, when he clearly watched me leave it there. His defense was that he was there until 6pm, which doesn’t fly since my reservation was from 4-9pm. Customer service hits an all time low, when the people you are paying won’t do you the courtesy of mentioning that the car could be locked in after hours. I did not pay to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a fuel guzzling truck.
I don’t know how much money I wasted on fuel for the truck, fuel for the car I had to borrow, and the inconvenience it caused myself and everyone involved.
It goes without saying that the warnings that everyone mentioned were true. I will never use your services again, nor will I recommend them to any of my friends or family who may require moving vehicles, storage, etc. It was by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had the misfortune of wasting my hard earned money on.
