UHAUL is ripping you off if you “fill the tank” upon returning the vehicle.
A few months ago I rented a UHAUL van to move my daughter into her apartment. The rental went smoothly. I was given exactly what I asked for and was told to ‘Fill the tank’ before returning it or incur a hefty fee. That is true and I appreciated them letting me know that! I checked the gas gauge when I got in and it was right on the full mark. We used it for about 6 hours. I drove approx. 45 miles. I stopped at the gas station less than a mile from the UHAUL facility to ‘fill it up’. It ended up taking a lot more gas than I thought it should. (Based on the miles driven and the gas it took to refill it, I was getting about 4 miles to the gallon.)
When I got done filling it, I noticed that the gas gauge was another quarter talk beyond the full mark. This equated to about $25 as I figured it.
When I told the guy at the counter that the truck was not full when I picked it up and it was now holding a lot more gas than I should be responsible for, he pointed out that the contract states that UHAUL is not responsible for any gas left by the renter. They didn’t tell me that full meant up to the full line on the gas gauge, not a full tank, even though they were well aware that they apparently never ‘fill the tank’.
I refused to pay and finally he gave me a $20 voucher to apply to the rental. Because my estimations were approx. I finally relented, but I still feel they are not being honest and forthright in their rental practices and wonder how much free gas they are getting with each time the trucks are used.
UHAUL needs to be more honest in their dealings.
