I will never use Uhaul again. My husband and I were left stranded for several days and got little to no help while stuck in the middle of the Mohave desert. We were moving from New Mexico to San Francisco and had a 17′ truck with a tow dolly on the back. Pay a little more and get a new Penske truck to avoid any long distance move breakdowns. The few hundred you’ll save upfront is not worth all the miserable Uhaul pains.
We left in the evening from Albuquerque and made it only 2 hours out when there was an electrical malfunction with the car and we had to pull into a hotel and we were told to wait until the morning for a Uhaul mechanic to come out and service the truck. He didn’t arrive until noon. He fixed the issue and then we drove for about another 4 hours to Flagstaff and stopped for lunch. We got back in the truck and it didn’t start. We called Uhaul and this time it took 30 minutes to reach an operator who then transferred us to the repair line and we held on the phone for 1 hour to talk to someone. Thank god we had a cell phone that was charged. They said they’d send someone out within an hour and it took 2.5 hours for him to arrive. Mind you, it was 100 degrees outside and we were suffering in the heat. When the mechanic arrived he said he didn’t have the right part (solenoid for the starter was broken). We waited until 3 pm the next day before he got back to us and the complaints to Uhaul made no difference. We had long checked out of our hotel and had to wait outside.
We drove just another few hours and as we headed into the beginning of the Mohave desert (115 degrees heat now) at the California/Arizona inspection check point, the truck broke down AGAIN. We waited over an hour to reach someone and they promised to send a tow truck within 15 minutes. I was 5 months pregnant then, which I explained to them, and they still didn’t care. We were suffering in that unbearable heat and the highway patrol was fuming at the Uhaul folks because after 2 hours no tow truck was in sight. He said he was going to have his tow guys bring it into Needles (the next town) at Uhaul’s expense. We were blocking a whole lane at the inspection station and causing a major traffic jam. Uhaul didn’t seem to care and when the highway patrolman’s tow truck came in a few minutes, we explained to Uhaul that they would be paying the $300 fee and not us. After arguing with them for over an hour in the heat (the tow truck guy was not going to release the truck until he got paid) they finally agreed to let us talk to a supervisor who authorized the charge to be paid by Uhaul and to have the truck towed to Uhaul’s service station in the morning. It was 10 pm by this point. We then had to battle Uhaul to make sure someone noted in our file that our hotel and food expenses would be paid. We were fully disgusted by the customer service at this point and the poor attitude of their employees on the phone who kept saying Uhaul would not do this or that.
The next morning we awoke and Uhaul said they still had not paid the unofficial Uhaul towing company and by 7pm that night, nothing had happened. They said we’d have to wait until the next day!!!
The following morning we called Uhaul and they said they promised they’d get our truck and take it to service it. This time, we stayed on the phone and said we would not take back that truck and that we wanted a brand new truck and that Uhaul would be moving everything from our old truck to the new one. They fought us but I raised a storm and they finally agreed. But this didn’t happen until almost 6pm the next day.
By this point, we should have long been in San Fran. The 3 day trip we had budgeted and planned out turned into 10 long days. We had to pay for everything up front and thankfully we had enough room on our credit card to pay for all the hotels (which were expensive at the time because of the Fourth of July holiday period). We missed several job interviews and real estate appointments due to this fiasco.
When we finally got to San Francisco, they surprisingly gave us almost all our money back for the hotels and food (we’re still waiting for $50 they owe us). While we were on the road, we saw all the shiny, new Penske trucks rolling by and were kicking ourselves for not putting a little more money up front and avoiding this disaster.
