This is a true story.
I rented a Uhaul trailer. The staff told me that I have to be back by 7 pm the same day I rented it. I wasn’t sure if I can make it back on time because the traffic here was bad. The staff then told me if I couldn’t make it on time, just give him a call. So off I went.
Later that night, I was stuck in traffic and definitely couldn’t get back on time. So I called my Uhaul store. Someone picked up; I told him I can’t be back on time and ask what I should do. He told me “just keep it overnight. Take it easy.” He sounded friendly, so I was relaxed.
The next morning when I returned the equippment. The Uhaul store manager was shouting at me, saying that my late return caused other customer to cancelled their move. I explained to him that I did call and was informed that I could keep it overnight. He just said he and the other guy were there last night, and there wasn’t any phone rings! He just keep accusing me of lying, and was very determined from the start to charge me a late fee of 200 dollars which wasn’t even stated in the contract. He pointed to the note attached on his computer screen saying that I shouldn’ve read this note which says there’s a 200 fee for late return, which I was never instructed to read!
So the manager just ignored my objection and printed out a receipt with all rental fees plus 200 dollar “late fee.” But when I look closely at the receipt, there’s not an item for late fee, instead, he put “Cleaning $200.” I immediately realized that this manager is just trying to swallow 200 dollars from me into his pocket.
This is an individual story. The Uhaul location is in Huntington Station, New York. Be very careful when you’re around that area!
