Uhaul sucks. If you google that phrase you will find countless documented examples of when and how it has sucked in the past and why it is likely to continue sucking into the foreseeable future.
Last night we rented (I rented, actually) a Uhaul to pick up some free (yea!) furniture from a girl in the Branch. First of all, Uhaul had two (2) addresses online for the same phone number, but neither address was right! It turns out neither address was even close! Oh, and when Uhaul says, “$19.95″ they really mean “$91.95″. But hidden fees are nothing compared to the fact that they gave me a truck with a bad battery. That’s right, after we loaded the couch, chair, and ottomans into the truck, guess what didn’t start? Yep, the truck. So we hunted for jumper cables: the local fire station didn’t have any, no one at Ryan Field (that’s where Northwestern plays football, we were right across the street) had them either.
So we found a gas station that let us take their battery jump starter, I left my cell phone and license as collateral.
And then the hood of the truck wouldn’t open until I jammed a piece of metal in it. Then we returned the jumper to the gas station where the guy handed me the phone and said, “you have a call.” It was Dangerous Dan. Sorry I missed your call Dangerous Dan, I was driving a Uhaul from Evanston back to Chicago.
As my roommate pointed out, notice the truck says, “moving made easier” not “moving made easy.” I suppose that ordeal was easier than carrying the furniture on my back that 15 miles.
