What could i be charged with? i took a uhaul to the border ……? my roomy said the cops might be after him and he wanted to leave the country. so i hatched a plan ,rent a uhaul for a two day intown move i ...
When my Air Force bound son found an apartment last week near Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, he called me for help. I got in touch with Uhaul, first on your website and then by phone (I believe I was directed to call the Harrisburg, Pa. regional office to set up the move). I needed to rent a 26 truck and tow dolley from your company to move my sons furniture from Ashland, Pa. to Hampton, Va. Pickup date was to be 10/25/03. Our plans were for me to drive the truck and tow my car along so I could just drive back home when we were finished. I received an email confirmation the day after setting up the reservation and was told I would receive a call the day before the move to confirm the time to pick up the equipment. On the evening of the 24th, I recd a call from Uhaul informing me they were having trouble finding the equipment I needed. They assured me they would keep checking and would contact me the next morning with the details.
On 10/25/03, the morning of our planned move, I recd another call from Uhaul saying they didnt have the equipment I wanted available and couldnt have any equipment in Ashland as requested. I was told a 24 truck was available in Reading, Pa. and an auto transport was available in Pottsville, Pa. I asked about the possibility of having the truck moved to Pottsville so I could pick both items up there, but was told if that could be done, it wouldnt happen until the next day, 10/26/03. Not wanting to waste a day, I agreed to pick up the truck in Reading and then drive to Pottsville and pick up the auto transport. Since this was adding about 49 miles to my total trip mileage (not to mention the 49 miles with my car to get to Reading in the first place), I asked for extra miles to be added to my reservation, so I wouldnt exceed the 431 miles allowed. I was told I would receive an email confirmation showing the new costs, the pickup addresses in Reading and Pottsville, and an increase in the mileage of my trip by 100 miles.
I picked up the truck in Reading at about 12:15 PM on Sat., 10/25/03. At the time of this pickup, the person handling the transaction printed up a receipt that was about 4 feet long, pointed to some areas I needed to sign, showed me on the receipt that the fuel said it was just below ¼ tank, handed me the key, and pointed to the truck I was to take. She then went back into the store and continued waiting on other customers.
As I was making sure the truck was ready to be moved (making sure the back door was secured and generally trying to get a feel for the size of the vehicle I would be driving), I noticed damage to the truck on the drivers side about ½ of the way back on the lower body. Although I should have questioned this damage, I was sure the store knew that this existed before I left their parking lot, and I was already late and needed to get to Pottsville and then to Ashland.
After pulling out of the lot and not going more than 5 miles, I noticed the gas gauge was very low and didnt think I would be able to go too far. I stopped and put in 37 ½ gals. of gas which cost me $52.00.
Upon arriving in Pottsville, I signed the agreement for the auto transport and had my credit card charged. When I backed the truck up to the auto transport, it was discovered that the ball on the truck was too big (it was 2 5/16 instead of the required 2). The only solution I was offered was to cancel the rental of the auto transport and credit my credit card. When I asked about moving a 2 ball from another truck to my truck, I was told this couldnt be done. Not wanting to waste more time, I proceeded to Ashland where my family was waiting to help load the truck.
After loading, I drove the truck to Frederick, Md. where I needed to pick up some more furniture at my house, and my son followed me with my car. We were going to leave Frederick the next day, 10/26/03, and I figured I could find an auto transport or tow dolley in that area before we left.
Sunday morning, 10/26/03, I called Uhaul at the Harrisburg regional office and informed them of the problem with the ball size on my truck and not having picked up any equipment yet to tow my car. I was told I was now out of their region and needed to call the Baltimore, Md. regional office. The Baltimore office told me they had a tow dolley in Baltimore City, and I needed to bring the truck there to pick it up. This would have added another 100 miles roundtrip, and I still wasnt sure the ball size problem would be fixed. When I mentioned that only 100 miles had been added to my trip to account for picking the truck up in Reading, I was told nothing had been added to the trip. The Baltimore office was looking at my reservation online and could see no additions to mileage. I then called the Harrisburg office back and asked why no addition was made to my reservation and why I received no email confirmation like I had requested and that was agreed to be sent. I was told by the person who had agreed to this increase and to send me the email that she was too busy and didnt get to it. At this point, or maybe even before this point, I began to get mad. I told this person I would need to drive to Baltimore to pick up a tow dolley and not only did I need the extra 100 miles she promised to begin with, but I needed another 100 miles for this trip to Baltimore. She said, fine Ill give you 200 and at this point she hung up on me. When I called back to talk to her Supervisor, I was told her Supervisor didnt work on Sunday.
After wasting all this time, I decided I wasnt going to go to Baltimore without knowing my problem with the ball could be resolved, so my son volunteered to drive me back to Frederick when we were done unloading and had turned the truck back in to Uhaul. This would be a 440 mile round trip for him. I reluctantly agreed to have him do this.
We unloaded the truck the next day, 10/27/03, and needed to drop it off at Uhaul in Newport News, Va. When I turned in the truck, I was told the gas gauge was too low and there was damage to the truck. I would be charged a $20.00 service charge plus $2.00 per gallon for the gas to bring it up to the level I recd it and could be held liable for the damage to the truck. I explained about the total disaster Uhaul had made of this trip, about all of the gas and time I had wasted picking up equipment in cities other than where I wanted it, and how my son needed to waste gas to take me back to Frederick. The response I got from the person waiting on me was I only work her sir. After calling the store that I had recd the truck from, they were able to verify that the damage was there when I got the truck. But I was still charged a total of $45.00 for the low fuel level. I explained how unreasonable this was, but still ended up paying this amount.
Ive never been treated in this way by any Company I have ever dealt with. I do not appreciate the attitude of any of the people involved, and the total lack of customer service I recd. If this is the way your Company treats customers, I can only hope everyone gets smart enough not to use you. Whenever I see a Uhaul on the road, it will always remind me of the nightmare my family has been through over the last 3 days.
