I’ve had two experiences with UHaul…and please don’t ask me why I went back the second time after the first time was so horrible…Actually..if you did ask me that…I’d have a sincere answer.."I thought that Maine UHaul’s would be better then the Colorado UHaul I had used before." There…I said it….Shame on me.
A few years ago, I moved into an apartment in Colorado with a significant other. He decided to go ahead and rent a UHaul truck that we would pick up…drive to his old residence..pack it up and then drive it to our new glorious apartment. I went with him, so that he didn’t have to leave his car there. What a surprise it was to get there and realize that not only was the truck a standard (which my Significant Other couldn’t drive) (AND the only truck "left") but it was an old-world standard with Low Gear, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I basically had to have a trucker’s license to even mount the truck (in which I basically had to MOUNT it since it was a heap of junk.)
Needless to say, I was volunteered to drive this hunk of metal from one end of Colorado Springs to another. The beginning spelled it all out. I couldn’t move the seat forward….in order to reach the pedals so I had to prop myself up using a few jackets and tool boxes (that were rattling around the front) and sit on the EDGE of the seat. I then managed to jerk the truck out into the 8 lane highway and stall. I looked in my gigantic (yet cracked) rear mirror and the men working at this UHaul were pointing and laughing. Once I drove this non-working piece of machinary to the destination…we stopped it..loaded it and then tried to turn it back on and guess what…that’s right…the battery was dead. The hood had been PAINTED..yes…PAINTED shut and so we had to take a crowbar and pry open the hood. When we finally did get this heap back to the UHaul dealership they wanted to charge us for the damage to the truck because of "overuse of a crowbar." Needless to say….I didn’t have a good word to say about them.
Then came the Maine experience. Recently I moved and needed to rent a truck to move my stuff about 15 miles away. We saw the sign on the UHaul truck that says, 19.99 our BEST value. We pulled in…got our 20 bucks out and headed to the cash register. The guy behind the counter then proceeded to nail on charges and when things were said and done…I shelled over 70 dollars….for a 6 hour rental. Baloney.
That’s my overall look at Uhaul. They stink.
