I’ve rented with other self-move companies (like Penske) and had good experience. So I didn’t expect much difference from U-Haul. Unfortunately I was wrong and should have seen the warning signs.
I reserved a truck 6 weeks before my move-out date. As my rental date approached I was supposed to receive a confirmation call from U-Haul. I never did and had to call them. They reassured me that everything was on track.
The day of my move finally arrived and again I was supposed to receive a call telling me where and when to pick up my truck. [by the way, I was already displeased that they would NOT give me this info at least the night before] I waited and waited and finally called U-Haul. After waiting on hold for 40 minutes (and that is not an exaggeration), they told me my truck was not quite yet available but to call back. They weren’t all that nice about it either.
This went on all day. I spent most of the day on hold. I was becoming quite nervous because my lease expired that day. If I was not moved out I would be charged a fee. In addition, the next day was Monday, I had work and other things, I simply had to move this day.
Anyways, by 4:00 I had no truck and had no idea what to do. My neighbor was also moving, had reserved a U-Haul, and got stiffed just like me. She ended up driving 75 miles to a U-Haul dealer that did have a truck, coming back, and then moving. That was crazy. Anyways, I just happened to see another neighbor who had a pickup truck. I told him my situation and he gave me the keys. I called a few other friends and we were able to do the move without the U-Haul truck. I should not I was only moving 6 miles away.
This was unacceptable and unbelievable. U-Haul really is one of the worst companies out there. They called me the next day to see if I be willing to use a van instead of a truck. Thanks. I talked to yet another neighbor that same apartment complex who still HAD NOT GOTTEN HIS TRUCK ON TUESDAY. Incredible.
NEVER USE U-HAUL IF IT IS AT ALL POSSIBLE TO AVOID.
