We rented a 26′ truck to move some furniture locally. Every time we stopped at a signal light, the alarm went off and the compressor would run. We believe that the air system had(has) a leak in it. In addition, the truck would not lower down for “easy loading.” This was probably also related to the air system leak. When we tried to put on the emergency brake, we found that the cable was not even connected - it was hanging down by the foot pedals. We left several messages for the manager to contact us, and they never made any attempts. In addition, we emailed corporate U-Haul and they sent us an email stating that the manager would contact us. Again, the manager never made any attempts. We recontacted corporate via email and received no response from them. One month later, we attempted to rent another vehicle from a different U-Haul location. We explained the previous problems to the manager and he assured us that we would receive a newer vehicle which he currently had out on his lot and gave us a confirmation number for the rental. On the night prior to our rental, we received a message on our answering service that we needed to go to a different, much further (about 20 miles from our home)location to rent the vehicle. We contacted the manager we spoke with earlier and he told us that it was out of his hands; he was not happy because he said that U-Haul took the reservation from him and his hands were tied - there was nothing he could do. We called the new location (a which apparently contracts with U-Haul) and he said he did not know how old the vehicle was, but that he was not thrilled with U-Haul either (specifically, he said that he was ready to fire them). He continued to say that he has problems with them and their contracts all of the time, that their rental system is all messed up. We decided to drive out and look at the vehicle before committing ourselves. As with our previous rental two weeks earlier, it was an old (probably from the 1970’s) truck. We cancelled the reservation and rented from Budget instead. The Budget Rental vehicle was maybe 2 years old, clean, and ran just fine ( and all). The rental was also cheaper than what we were quoted from U-Haul by about $40. We will never even try to take a chance with U-Haul again!
