I was coordinating my move out of my apartment to a new house. I lined up some friends to help on a specific day, and called U-haul to reserve a truck about 6 weeks in advance. I should have known something was up when the local U-haul place (not a gas station renting U-Haul), did not answer the phone. Instead, I called their 1-800 number, and reserved a truck for the day I needed it. I was told, or lead to believe, that they would contact me the day before.

At about 2 in the afternoon the day before I was planning to move, I called to confirm my reservation. The guy said I have you down to pick it up tonight, and return it tomorrow morning. I told him that it was not what I reserved, and that I could not adhere to that timeline, since I was unable to pick up the truck that night, and my helpers were not available. Furthermore, he insisted that he had called and talked to me about the changed time, which was completely untrue, despite his insistence that we had. He told me the only thing I can do is call the 1-800 number to see what they can do.

So, I call back to the 1-800 number, and they confirm my actual reservation, not this phony one that the local guy was telling me. However, still no truck available. She said she would try to find me a truck in my area. Well, seeing that I needed assurance of having a truck the next day, and she seemed uncertain of finding me a truck, I asked to speak to a manager. And of course, she was the only one there.

So, I call back the local guy, who is still insisting we spoke about the new time. When I tell him that since they can’t meet my reservation, and I am going to cancel altogether (in the interim I was able to get a truck from my local mechanic).

Turns out that U-Haul was going to charge me 19.95 for canceling the reservation for the truck that they did not have. After arguing with the guy about this, (hey, it’s only 20 bucks, but why should they get it?) I figure it’s a useless cause.

Well, instead of charging me 20 bucks, they charge me $120 bucks (guess I shouldn’t have argued). Fortunately, I was able to file a complaint with my credit card co. to get my money back, but U-Haul is an absolute joke. And forget about trying to escalate an issue within the co. You’ll find no valuable corp. contact information on their website.
