Let me preface this by saying that I have moved a total of 15 times since college, which was about 8 years ago. I am no stranger to the move and what an annoyance it can be. I also have become well-versed in what needs to be done and when, so I figured that booking a 14 foot rental truck from UHaul about 1 month before my scheduled move date would be a good idea. I booked the truck to pick up at 8am on a Saturday, and they charged my account, told me which local agent it would be handled from and told me to sit tight. I followed up with the local a week later, and they informed me that they normally receive the reservations from the central booking place about 3 days in advance. I asked if this would pose any problem, ie availability, and they claimed no. Not to mention, I had already been charged the deposit and did not want to double book with the local. Big mistake. I just called to confirm, and it turns out that I have been slated for a cargo van to pick up at 6pm, instead of the 14 ft truck at 8am. How did this happen? It happened because it is UHaul policy apparently, and that is the mantra that was repeated. No logic, just that policy dictates that they submit requests 24 hours before the date needed, and if they don’t have the trucks, you are screwed. Better yet, no one even called to tell me this, I had to hunt them down like animals. I could get nowhere with local, and the number which took my reservation was a solid busy signal. When asked to speak to the supervisor, she offered me alternative places to pick up a truck, all at night, and all 15 miles out of the way (that costs money). So, I was able to secure another truck through Ryder on the fly, which may or may not accomodate my move, but I will be damned if I EVER give another penny to the organization I have dubbed "U-SUCK". Save yourselves…never bother with them. I was sorry I had!
