I had to move into my new house this weekend… it was quite the ordeal trying to coordinate the move in of six guys (we live on campus at U of M) and U-Haul certainly did not help. A reservation was placed at the U-Haul in Midland, MI, where two of my roommate live, and confirmed two days prior to the move in date. However, little did we know that the reservation did not guarantee a truck… for when we arrived at U-Haul they informed us that they would call us when the truck arrived.
What kind of reservation is that? One where the actual item is not reserved at all… one that does absolutely nothing to ensure that a truck would be available. Thats the dumbest reservation system ever. If I wanted to reserve a truck without actually reserving it, then I wouldn’t have called in the first place.

Okay, anyways, after sitting by the phone for six hours, we were informed that there would be no trucks available in Midland, nor any city within a reasonable driving distance. There was, nonetheless, a truck 90 minutes away that would be available. Options were weighed, mac and cheese was eaten, and a decision was formed. The 90 minute drive would have to be taken.
The drive was scenic, the parts of Northern Michigan that I had never seen before were passed and soon we were in Lansing, MI, home of the Michigan State Spartans. We arrived at the U-Haul place just an hour and half after leaving Midland. But the saga was not over.
Not only did they not have the truck that was supposedly "reserved" for us, but the service was absolutely horrible. I get better service from recently paroled McDonald’s employees than this place. Nonetheless, we were informed that a truck was available 20 minutes away.
Finally, after all the drama, and another 20 minute drive, we had our U-Haul truck. Custom equipped with a broken loading dock that we did not find out was broken until we were back in Midland.
Okay, now for the decent part of this all too "exciting" story, the ride in the U-Haul truck was more pleasant than I had thought it would be. There was actually air conditioning… and the seats were reasonably comfortable. The radio was pretty bad though and the display didn’t work.
When it came down to it, the truck was 10 times better than the service. And the job was done, even though it took the whole weekend.
