U Haul no guarantee at all! U Haul In the last three years I had to use U-Haul service two times. Poor me! My experience with U-Haul trucks and services resembles a nightmare ...
Ever wonder how certain companies can continue to stay in business when they provide such deplorable products and service? Well, it’s a direct result of consumers like myself who never learn their lesson.
My experience with U-Haul began in April. We were moving to a new city, approximately three hours away, so I visited our local U-Haul rental store and put a deposit down on 17-ft. truck.
The rental agent we dealt with was rude and very un-helpful. There was only one truck available, which was dirty both inside and out. The steering and brakes also needed work, but our only option was to drive over an hour to rent a truck from a different dealer.
We decided, against our better judgment, to take the truck. We packed all of our belongings inside and began the drive to our new home. The weather was a combination of freezing rain and drizzle, which made driving the truck even more difficult.
When we arrived we started to unload the truck. About halfway through, we discovered that the roof of the truck had leaked! Mattresses, clothes, books and other items were soaked! Clothes had to be taken to the Laundromat and we all spent the night on the floor, while the mattresses dried. Everything was stained and smelly, because the water that leaked in was a combination of dirt and rust. The wet books were a total loss.
After spending most of the night salvaging our soggy belongings, we returned our truck to a local agent. This was the beginning and the end of our most pleasant experience with this company.
The agent was very helpful, putting us in touch with the main U-Haul office regarding our wet items. He also informed us that the previous agent had overcharged us $10 for our deposit, and returned our money.
We immediately telephoned the main U-Haul office. A very (again) rude and unhelpful person answered my call. I explained that the truck we rented had leaked and was in poor condition. I asked them what the policy was regarding reimbursement for our wet items. She then put me on hold, then came back and asked me what I wanted them to do about it! I said I would like to be reimbursed the $26 it cost me to wash all of my clothes. This is all I asked for! She told me there was nothing they could do if I hadn’t purchased insurance when I rented the truck. This was the first time I had ever heard the word ‘insurance.’ It was never offered when I rented the truck. I told her this, and she said she would have someone call me back. It’s been two months and I haven’t heard a word.
Unfortunately, several weeks later, I was again in a situation where I had to rent a U-Haul trailer from my original dealer. I had swore ‘Never Again’ but we were in a bind. Of course, I could have predicted another nightmare, and U-Haul never disappoints; this time we were overcharged for the rental itself and the tires on the trailer were so poor that we could barely keep it on the road.
Overall, U-Haul gets my worst rating! Customer service is non-existent, independent rental agents are not being monitored and many of the trucks are in poor mechanical and physical condition. In short, U-Haul at your own risk!
