We got home with our belongings in one piece, but no thanks

to U-Haul. We got a hitch and lighting harness installed at our local U-Haul, and reserved a trailer a month in advance at the U-Haul nearest my daughter’s home in Madison, WI. A few days before pick-up, she got an e-mail that she would have to travel to Sun Prairie, 30 minutes away, to pick up the trailer. We got to Sun Prairie to find not a U-Haul ’store’ but the place where old rental equipment goes to die. Need to rent a rusty lawnmower,

plumbing snake, greasy turkey roaster, or dirty trailer? We know just the place! Sonny hooks up the trailer, but,

oops, lights don’t work. Haul trailer over near building,

dad comes out. Father and son mess with wiring and trailer

FOR OVER TWO HOURS, then announce maybe we should pull

car into their garage, where they proceed to remove the

interior of car and tear out wiring. After ANOTHER hour,

announce we’re good to go. We see lights lighting and

flashing, pay $75 for the privilege of wasting three

hours, and hit the road. By now it’s almost dark, so we

load as much as we can, go to bed, get up at 6 a.m., finish

packing and hit the road. Stop for gas and coffee, check

lights, and oh, here’s a surprise, brake lights work,

left turn works, but NO RIGHT TURN SIGNAL. All wires

seem to be attached, we’re on the road late already, so

we bite the bullet and head out. Luckily, we did not

have any other problems and made it home safely. I am

now trying to get reimbursed by U-Haul for the $75 I

had to pay to get the lights to work.
