In one way, I am glad to see that I am not alone in my disgust and hatred of U-Haul, as at least I know it’s not me alone that gets the shaft with them. If you think the price of U-Haul alone is enough to make it a better choice than Ryder or Budget, remember this — reservations are NOT guaranteed. Customer service is non-existent, and apparently the computer system is so wretched that people at the national support desk have no clue what is going on locally. My particular horror story:
I was moving about 50 miles on a Saturday, having coerced three friends into helping out. I showed up at 7:45 a.m., 15 minutes after the place opened. I was informed with no hint of sympathy that not only did I NOT have a van, but: a) She had called me to tell me this so it shouldn’t be a surprise (she had called my WORK number at 10:00 p.m. the Friday night before!); b) Because I didn’t have a van, she hadn’t charged me, so it’s not a big deal (tell that to my friends, myself or my new apartment where I was paying rent on an empty apartment).
What made the situation worse was that she then told me that there WAS a truck to use, although it was someone else’s, but I could take it because I showed up early. Doing the wrong thing by trying to do the right thing, I declined to ruin someone else’s day, largely because the woman assured me that MY truck should be arriving any minute. I spent the entire day in constant communication with her, and she finally told me that I should stop calling her because she’d call me when the truck showed up. Then, fifteen minutes later, she left for the day! I ended up having to hire a moving company.
(FYI, this was reported to the Better Business Bureau, who negotiated a settlement with U-Haul, but BBB told me that this kind of thing happens all the time with U-Haul. Why are they still in business again?)
I’ve used Ryder at least five or six other times, as well as hiring moving companies twice. Although moving stinks, those experiences have been bliss compared to U-Haul. I wouldn’t wish U-Haul on my worst enemies.
