U Haul BLOWS Go elsewhere U Haul In one way, I am glad to see that I am not alone in my disgust and hatred of U-Haul, as at least I know it's not me alone that gets the shaf...
Rented a truck online (I guess that was my first mistake). Someone for Uhaul was supposed to call the next day to confirm, never got a call. Called Uhaul 800 number and the told me to call the tiny hole in the wall repair shop where I would be picking up the truck. Spoke with the man at the shop who confirmed my reservation.
On the night of the first half of my move I went to pick up the truck. The guy at the shop said he rented the truck out to a woman who needed to move a sofa but she should be back any minute. Long story short, the woman never brought MY TRUCK back.
The guy at the repair shop sent me home and said he’d call “dispatch” to find another truck. He calls me and says there is a truck about 3 miles from where I live and I have to pick it up within the next 15 minutes before it closes. I jump in the car and RACE to get there on time. I get there just as they are turning off the lights but the guy at the counter helps me check in. As he is finishing up he says, “ok, now have this back by 6 tomorrow morning.” Excuse me? My reservation says I want it for 24 hours. Well that’s the only truck they have and it is going to be rented out by someone else the next day. The guy says he can reserve a van for me to use from 9-3 which I unwillingly accept since I have nothing else.
The next morning I called the Uhaul 800 number to speak with a supervisor and hopefully get the truck for free. This “supervisor” was horrible. He had NO INTENTION of helping me, but instead made it a point of pointing out how ignorant I am for not reading the fine print. You see, it doesn’t matter how long you want a truck for…it is Uhaul’s policy that they will offer you whatever they have for as long as it is available. And if it doesn’t meet your needs, you’re screwed and they have fulfilled their obligation by offering you a truck (or so the guy on the phone said). It’s one thing to give me the company line, but it is another to have an attitude that says you the customer are wrong and I’m right when I did nothing wrong in the first place!!!
Later that day I go to pick up the van and get to the lot to find about 7 trucks sitting in the lot (all the size that I need) and not one van. There is no other customer in the lot and I swear that not more than half of those trucks was going to leave that day. I ended up getting the truck I originally wanted buy why in the world I couldn’t have taken it the night before I’ll never know.
The moral of the story is don’t trust Uhaul for anything. They don’t realize how hard it is to move and that time is at a premium while moving. I couldn’t adjust my entire schedule simply because they didn’t have my truck available. If you aren’t going to have a truck for me, don’t take the reservation. I’ll gladly go elsewhere, and believe me, next time I definitely will.
