I am sorry to have to complain about $5, but the principle behind it is important to me, and others might be interested….I was charged $5 for a Uhaul truck rental reservation that I cancelled, and Uhaul will not refund me. When making the reservation, nothing was mentioned of a non-refundable charge. And during the reservation, they couldn’t confirm my desired location for truck pickup or any location for that matter. They wanted 24 hours to let me know the location. Then after 24 hours, they wanted until 5pm the day prior to my rental day to tell me where I would have to pick up the truck. Concerned that this was a bit disorganized, I cancelled the reservation with Uhaul and made one with a competitor that could confirm a location. My feeling was that if Uhaul’s pickup location meant extra miles for me, I’d have to pay the ~$.80/mile for the travel both ways. If I waited until the day before to find out the location, I’d have little chance of being able to rent from another company at a reasonable location, and then I’d be stuck traveling the extra distance and paying extra money. Nevertheless, none of this meant anything to Uhaul and they still are keeping the $5 non-refundable reservation fee they didn’t tell me about….which I think is unreasonable for them to have to begin with, and it’s even more unreasonable if they can’t even guarantee a pickup location for a truck when you’re making the reservation.
