U Haul customer service?! I’d pay double to a company without!!! U Haul I dropped the truck in the lot, put the keys in the drop box... the next day I received a call from UHAUL to come and move the truck to anot...
My girlfriend and myself rented a U-Haul to move her 120 miles to Kansas City. In the town where she lived there weren’t too many places to rent trucks so we went with U-Haul. We asked for a 14′ truck, ample space for what she had, even though the dealer suggested a 17′. We reserved the truck a week in advance by going in to the place and putting down a deposit in person. The day before the move we got a call from the dealer that told us we were being upgraded to a 17′ truck because they had no 14′ available. Fine. I didn’t think that driving a 14-foot truck vs. a 17-foot truck would be that different. BUT, they also told us that the truck wouldn’t be ready until 1 PM (even after we had specifically requested an early pickup time). We were furious, but could do nothing, since calling the dealer just got us put on hold for a lengthy period of time and run-around.
When we picked up the truck, it had less than a quarter tank of gas, but they marked on the receipt that there was 1/4 tank. When I remarked on this, they said that 1/4 tank was the lowest they could put down, and for me to just return it with that amount of gas in the truck.
Well, we filled up the truck with her things. Also with gas, I’ve never had an experience with diesel fuel, so I filled it up at a cost of $40. I didn’t know how much gas it would take to get there and the risk of running out of gas was worse than the cost of the fuel.
We drove the truck and unloaded it. When we returned the truck, there was about a half a tank left in it. I asked if I could be reimbursed for my extra expense in filling the tank. The man at the Kansas City dealer pointed to a sign that said, in essence ‘no’. That was all. I don’t know where U-Haul employees come from, but it’s the bottom of the customer service barrel. He offered no help, and barely said a word to us. I had to go online to find the customer service number. I called national customer service and spoke to one Nancy, who informed me that there was nothing we could do. I remonstrated with her, but got nothing in response. She was rude and unhelpful, and would not connect me with a supervisor.
All in all, a wholeheartedly bad moving experience, complicated unnecessarily by the company. I’ll never, ever, ever use U-Haul again as long as I live.
