In preparation for my move in August, I made a reservation for a U-haul on-line. This reservation was made in early July for the move in early August. If someone did not call me 24 hours before the day of my reservation, I was supposed to call the 1-800 number provided. Twenty-four hours before my pick-up I had not heard anything so I called the number. The friendly person got my information and looked up my information. Her tone of voice changed to one of panic while she told me someone would call by 7:00pm. No one called and I couldn’t get through that evening.

The next morning I called again and was told there were no U-hauls for me and that it didn’t matter if I had a reservation. I had the printed confirmation of my U-haul that said I was to receive a U-haul of equal or greater value of what I rented. The agent repeated what she said, that there were no U-hauls and that is all there is to it. I spent the next two hours calling and being put on hold, only to be directed to that same lady. The main U-haul number was of no help. I then proceeded to call *all* U-haul renters in my area. Through some luck, I happened to call a local place as a U-haul was driving onto their lot. He said the U-haul had not been rented and that I could have that one. When I called the “lady” to tell her, she said that I couldn’t do that and that the truck was already promised to someone else (even though it wasn’t). Finally, through the kindness of the local U-haul renter, I was able to secure that U-haul. The “lady” from the on-line reservation called me and said that she had secured the U-haul at that location for me (and she had the nerve to sound *very* friendly, as if she had done me a favor). Considering I was supposed to have the U-haul from the start, and considering I had just spent the last two hours of valuable time on the phone, she had done me *no* favor. I did, through a lot of hassle, get the U-haul. This was *only* thanks to the local owners of the stations that rented U-hauls. The on-line people were no help and very unfriendly.

As a note, I did call other truck renters during that time and as I spoke to a Penske agent, she told me that the U-haul fiasco had been happening all weekend and that this was something that U-haul did on a regular basis. She said that is why Penske guarantees the U-haul or your money back (of course you are still stuck without a truck).

If you need a truck to move, check carefully, and rent through an office in your town. Avoid the on-line system completely. You are not guaranteed a truck no matter what the print-out says.
