This is the third time in two years I have rented from U-Haul and each time has been a lesson in hidden costs. The last time I rented from U-Haul I was instructed to drop the truck off with a specified reading on the fuel guage. I did this with reasonable precision. I was later fined $48 for failure to do this. I was not told I was being fined, the amount just showed up on my credit card a month later with no indication what the charge was for. After I figured out who made the charge, there was no recourse to speak to them about it or find out what the charge was for. There is only an 800 corporate number you can call to inquire about the charge, and then there are the usual endless prompts and finally, an “assistant” who will take the information but who takes no action. Once the “information” was taken, I need not tell you nobody ever called to follow up. Understand, at this point I still do not know who made the charge or what it was for. I later learned that the reading discrepancy on the fuel guage occured at a site 40 miles from where I dropped off the truck. This was the site for the next rental of that truck. Although I have the gas receipt to prove the truck was refueled, there is no recourse once the fine is levied. I can tell you that the time expenditure in tracking down the charge is not even worth pursuing it. Just pay and never rent from them again.
