My husband and were in the middle of a move, he is military and I am 6 months pregnant. We scheduled a truck through
the U-haul website that6 required us to put down a $5 service fee that was
non-refundable to have the reservation. We scheduled a 17′ truck with an
appliance dolly, 1 dozen furniture pads, and a utility dolly. This was
scheduled for pickup for Saturday September 27, 2003 at 7am.
I was called 9/23/03 by the Chantilly office and was told since their truck
broke down they could not honor our reservation and that they would have to
give our scheduled reservation to the people before us and we would have to
wait until 3:30pm if the truck came back then. I explained that this was not feasible, we are in the
middle of a move and scheduled everything accordingly. They would not budge
and told us the reservation did not have to be honored.
I proceeded to then call the main office and was given the district
office and spoke to a man by the name of “Ice.” I explained the
situation and was told he really did not care and did not want to discuss it
any further. This man was RUDE and NASTY. He is the worst sort of
representative for U-haul. I explained that normally if a company cared
about the reservation/customer they would find some other way to
accommodate, I.E. facilitate with another U-haul in the area to try and fix
the situation. He then proceeded to tell me he was canceling the reservation
all together and told me to listen to the silence as he hung up on me.
After that I tried to make one last effort and explained to the Regional
office what happened and how rude Ice was. They did not care at all either.
I then proceeded to ask them then to return the deposit since they were not
going to honor “confirmed reservation.” They refused and stated that
they did not have to honor any reservation that they could change the
reservation at will and that I had to pay just get a reservation that they
can change.
This is truly unacceptable. I cannot believe that U-haul would:
A. employ people as rude as Ice and claim he is a “district manager”
B. state that people have to pay for a reservation that U-haul can change at
will and does not have to honor.
Needless to say this has left as very bad experience and I have
contacted the BBB about this. I have also written to my local paper and
news stations in Washington DC. U-haul needs to change the way they treat
customers or get out of the business.
