Yes, U-Haul blows. It’s not a secret. But there are a few things you can do to make your experience a little better:
1. Make your reservation in person at a U-Haul Moving Center rather than a gas station that dabbles in U-Haul rentals. Don’t call the national number. Your reservation will only get screwed up or lost. Moving Center managers often are out late driving trucks in for the next day’s appointments. U-Haul dealers (gas stations, minimarts, etc) don’t do any extra work as a rule.
2. U-Haul guarantees a pickup day, not a pickup time. If you are moving a long distance, reserve your truck for the day before you need it and request a PM pickup time. Call that night and ask if the truck is ready. If it is, ask if you can just pick it up when they open the next day. Usually they will let you do this. If it is not ready and you get it the next day, negotiate a better rate or extra free miles for the inconvenience. Speak to the Moving Center Manager or Assistant Manager.
3. If you are going to be late returning your truck, call the roadside assistance number and report a fake breakdown. Give them a fake location. When you finally bring your truck back tell them nobody ever showed up to assist and the truck finally started. It’s dishonest but it’s better than paying for another day.
4. CHECK THE FUEL LEVEL BEFORE YOU TAKE THE TRUCK! If it’s not full, don’t accept the usual "Just bring it back at the same level." Insist that they fill it before you leave. All Moving Centers have about $100 in petty cash for fuel at all times.
5. Remember that U-Haul’s national customer service outranks the Moving Center Manager when it comes to resolving complaints. If the Manager won’t budge, annoy the national folks until they give. They can instruct the Manager to refund part of a rental or offer some other incentive.
6. Expensive, long moves with multiple pieces of equipment ARE negotiable. Get prices from Penske and Ryder also.
I put my time in behind a U-Haul desk as a Manager, so this ain’t no jive. Best of luck!
