Now that I”m a father, I can”t gamble with my life anymore So I won”t be renting from U-haul ever again. Not that I would want to anyway. During my last move, about a year and half ago, I decided to rent one of their trucks for $19.95. I was moving locally so I could return it to where I rented it. I new I would have to pay mileage and insurance(believe me, you better get this), so it would obviously cost me more than the price that is plastered all over their trucks. There is only one way you can pay that price, and that is to rent it, leave it on the lot and then return the keys. Even then there would be tax. In the end I paid about $95 even though I bought my own gas and did not buy packaging supplies or anything extra. There were fees on top of fees to rent that thing (I can’t remember exactly what for, just that it was outrageous).
Earlier that year my father rented from Ryder. The truck was very clean, safe, and twice as big and he only paid about $30 than I did for this piece of junk. When I got the keys and they showed me the truck I couldn”t believe my eyes. It was rusted, pieces were hanging off, the air in the tires was obviously low and even the dashboard had detached from their mounts. We immediately asked for another truck, although the others didn”t look hardly any better. They said all trucks were rented out and we had to take that one.
Once we started driving we found out that the brakes barely worked. We were sliding through stop signs even traveling at low speeds. We had to take the highway to get to where we needed to go. That truck rattled and shook like we were on a bad carnival ride. We late found out that one of the reasons for this was because two of the four rear tires were bald and warped. The one tire was so bald that it was paper thin. Loading the truck was easy, but the extra weight made it drive even worse and the brakes nonexistence. Fortunately, we only came close to colliding into the back of 2 other cars (no joke). My father did most of the driving and ranted and raved the whole time.
When we returned the wreck, we complained about our adventure and the only response we got was an ignorant look from the employee behind the counter. We asked to talk to management and didn”t get anywhere with him either. All we were told was to call the 800 number and complain. We threatened to put a call in to the police to have it inspected and kept off the road, but they genuinely did not care. We we”re rudely ignored.
I called the 800 number and didn”t get anywhere in the end. My only resolve is to never rent from this pitiful company again and to tell everyone else I possibly can to do the same.
If anyone has seen the 20/20 special on U-Haul and how bad they are, don”t think that the story was exaggerated, it was right on the money.
