U haul is a rip. U Haul
I had to do my move in two-trips…one to move my stuff into storage and a second one to move it long-distance (Wisconsin to Virginia).
I’d bought bunches of boxes (not a bad price), about $120 worth, and rented a truck for the short move. I was never told to inspect the INSIDE of the box part of the truck. We never asked for a hand truck (aka, a dolly), but there was one inside, just sitting at the back door. It wasn’t on our contract and we didn’t request it. I didn’t have anything to move that I’d need it for…because of that, we took it inside the apartment. I actually FORGOT it at first, and then sent someone back to get it because it was never used.
U-haul has this ‘add on’ policy. It’s hard to tell how many people they rip off with it. These things (the dollys) are supposed to have a ’seal’ and if you break it, you pay for the rental. Ours didn’t have a seal and even now, I couldn’t tell you what one looks like. Two other people were with me that helped me move..and they both walked inside and one by one, I asked them if they broke a seal..and they had no idea what I was talking about. So, the store (because I had three witnesses) dropped the ‘broken seal’ routine at that point and said that because I moved the dolly from the truck, it was considered ‘used’ and I’d still have to pay the rental. I told them, in my contract, I never agreed to pay for a dolly. I told them I didn’t ask for one. However, I had to pay a deposit of $100 on the truck and they refused to refund the dolly rental price. (I still can’t believe the argued with me over $7.) I left the store with the employees basically saying, ‘we’re charging you for it, complain, we don’t care’.
They also said, if I didn’t want to rent it, I should’ve left it where it was. (Going back to the ’seal’ routine.) I asked them what moving company in their right mind expects people to move their items in/out of a truck AROUND a dolly. They said, ‘you could’ve brought it back’….to which I replied…so you either get me with the dolly charge, or extra mileage, then?
I’ve checked rates everywhere…and Penske truck rental is the cheapest, especially through Monster Moving, even after you add on insurance. Next cheapest is budget. U-haul appears to be the only place with trailer rentals though, as far as I can tell.
I have to rent two large trucks for my move, which will run over $2000 even with Penske. (This would run over $4000 will U-haul.) U-haul is losing my business over a $7 dolly. Doesn’t sound like a smart move to me. The employees (at the Brown Deer Wisconsin location on Good Hope/Milwaukee) also said that they ‘don’t care’ who I do my next rental from. Maybe eventually, they will.
